Individual Counselling

I am a Person-Centred Counsellor who aims to treat each individual with respect, honesty and acceptance. This type of approach to counselling places great emphasis on providing a truly safe, relaxed environment for you to share your life issues in an empathic, non-judgemental and confidential way. One of the primary goals of Person-Centred Counselling is to increase self-esteem. This can be done by placing trust in your own feelings and experiences and relying on yourself to make decisions and having the ability to learn from those mistakes that cause conflict and turmoil, rather than repeating them over and over again.

In addition to working in a Person-Centered way, I also integrate techniques drawn from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. CBT is a type of therapy that aims to help you manage your problems by changing how you think and act.   By talking about these areas of concern, CBT can help you to change how you think (‘cognitive’) and what you do (‘behaviour’), which can help you feel better about life. I can help you make sense of your experience, find meaning and identify new cognitive and behavioural strategies for you to put into practice, so that you can make the changes you want in your life.

Depending on the reasons why you come to counselling, your goals and what you feel comfortable to talk about will determine how we work together.  You may want to focus on certain aspects so that you can make changes to improve and manage your day to day life, for example, finding ways to relax, to build self-esteem, relate with others differently or combat your depression and anxiety, so that you can move forward in your life in a more rewarding and fulfilling way.

About me...

24 years ago I experienced a personal loss which gave me a very different perspective on life. It was this very experience that led me to train as a Counsellor and support people who had also suffered life's challenges.

I have experience of working as a Counsellor and have been able to provide support to a vast array of clients who have presented with many issues such as rape, sexual abuse, mental health, self harm and children and young peoples issues etc.

I have over 3 years of counselling experience with local and national charities and also in private practice. Currently I work for a Mental Health Counselling Charity supporting clients in the Stockton, Hartlepool and East Durham areas. Additionally I am also working towards qualifying as a teacher and have worked as a lecturer for local FE colleges, private training providers and local organisations.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified Person-Centred Counsellor with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and have vast quantities of experience working with adults, children and young people.

I am in my last semmester at Teesside Univeristy studying to become a teacher.

I have premises in Hartburn, Stockton-on-Tees, that provides a private, safe environment for you to explore your life issues.
