About me

Life can be difficult sometimes and the circumstances we go through can lead to struggles such as low mood,  anxiety or frequent worries for any of us. If you feel, however, that you get repeatedly drawn into negative thoughts and moods then I can help you become unstuck and make some helpful changes. I am an experienced and compassionate Psychologist with over 16 years working experience in the NHS in various areas working with adults with  anxiety difficulties, depression, trauma,  loss,  health issues and/or addiction problems.

I am a very empathic listener and skilled at motivating people to make changes, so they can get their lifes back on track perhaps after being stuck. I can help you towards beneficial insights in what patterns keep you stuck in your current difficulties, but more importantly in getting you on the path of recovery. I have also worked sucessfully in helping couples, who find it hard to keep their relationship going due to communication , trust or other difficulties  they have had  in their realtionship.

I  tend to use various  beneficial and evidence based treatments to help you with your specific difficulties. The main therapy  approaches I  am trained and experienced in include: Cognitive behavioural Therapy (CBT); Mindfulness; Compassionate Mind Therapy; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); and Couple Counselling. If you want to find out more about potential treatment approaches please go to my website on: www.psychologicaltherapiesdumfries.com or give me a call for a free initial telephone consultation. All approaches work slightly differently but are part of  Sign and NICE guidelines recommended treatments for depression, anxiety issues, trauma and  health related mood issues many other  problems.  Please see my websites for client feedback and more information.

Clients often feedback that after only a few sessions they are making good progress, feel listened to and are really benefitting from the techniques learned in sesssions. you can find recent feedback from clients on my website.

If you want to find out more how I can help you with your specific difficulties to life a more fulfilled life, please get in touch either via email www.karina_woldt@hotmail.com or telephone (01848200350).
Please note that on Mondays and Tuesday I am at my NHS post thus may take a bit longer to respond.

If you are reading this you are probably already on your journey of wanting to make changes.  It  can be hard initially but always possible to change gradually so never give up hope, when your mood is dragging you down. When you are low or anxious your way of looking at things will be naturally focussed on more negative experiences or  thoughts, this is the way our brains work and not your fault. Its something you will have in common with all  people.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have over 16 years experience of working as a qualified chartered clinical Psychologist in the NHS  with clients who have a variety of psychological issues including: depression, anxiety, trauma, excessive worries, OCD, low self-esteem or social anxiety, grief issues, addictions and mood issues, relationship problems. Prior to that I worked as a Trainee Clinical Psychologist mainly with adults and teenagers with emotional difficulties, also providing therapy.

I am a trained Mindfulness teacher and regulary practice mindfulness. I am also a trained ACT  (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy )practitioner ( a specific cognitive behvaioural treatment which can often get good results with relatively short input).

In the last few years I have specialised in working with people with complex longstanding health issues and mood problems. Privately I work with clients with more general mood issues on their recovery with often very diverse and sometime complex issues. I also have ample experience working with trauma sufferers and the aftereffects of that, such as severe anxiety , reoccurring nightmares and  related changes on how you may view others or the world.

The training and qualifications needed to work as a clinical Psychologist  is much more extensive than starting as a Counsellor. I have 5 years training to a Diploma level of Psychology and than after some work experience,  finished my  3 year Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Glasgow in 2004. The training and follow on training courses  in specific treatment techniques have given me a good grounding in various psychological problems and various evidence based treatments which are often recommended within the Scottish sign guidelines including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ( CBT), Mindfulness based Cognitive Therapy (which helps you to stay more in the here and now and refocus your mind),  Compassionate Mind Therapy ( which helps you learning to be kinder and less harsh to yourself and is often recommended after  very complex difficulties relating back to complex childhood difficulties).  All the above therapies are often recommended as having good outcomes in well researched guidelines for depression, anxiety issues including OCD or Trauma, relationship difficulties  and health problems leading to mood issues.

I am currently building up further expertise continueing my training in the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approach which work on disentangeling yourself from negative thoughts and focussing more on what is really important in your life. I continue to update my training regularly in order to keep up to speed with new develoments in training and also have supervision regularily.

I am registered with the Health professionals Council (HCPC nr: PYL2287) and also follow the guidelines and regulations of the BPS (Britsh Psychological Society).
