Karen Parke Relationship & Sexual Therapist
12 Lower Clark Street
Hi and welcome to my page.
Most people have times in their life when things just 'don't feel right' or it all gets too much to make sense of what is going on. Talking to a qualified and skilled counsellor can really help to make sense of your feelings.
My main interests are relationships, but that doesn't just mean couples only. Think about how relationships are part of your life in general. These relationships can be based around, work, friends, family and also yourself. Learning about yourself and how you interact and form relationships can really help in all aspects of your life. The more understanding you have about what 'makes you tick' can help you form healthy relationships on every level.
Being accepted, listened to and supported can help to identify negative emotions or behaviours to enable positive growth and forward movement. I can also help you to enhance what good parts you already have in your relationship by giving you the tools to be able to identify when parts of the relationship may need a little extra help. The more awareness you have about you, each other and how a relationship works the more you will be able help yourselves if needed in the future.
I offer a confidential counselling service for couples or individuals in Scarborough. As it is most important for you to feel comfortable and at ease with me I offer an initial assessment of 30 minutes free of charge so you can meet with me and decide for yourself. This assessment will highlight the areas of concern that you have and for me to hear how you would like things to be different.
I was trained as, and work, using integrative methods. My main theory is systemic and I draw on a range of other methods such as; SFT - Solution Focused Therapy, TA- transactional analysis, CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, attachment theory and psychodynamic.
None of this may make any sense but what it really means is that I am able to use different approaches and techniques to suit you as a unique individual, because 'one size does not always fit all'.
Telephone and online 'real time' chat counselling
I also offer telephone and online chat 'real time' counselling. If you would like more information on either of these please email me and I will send you more information.
Relationship therapy is not about having someone to listen and take sides with either partner but to provide an accepting space for each to be equally heard and understood and to support you both with your goals for the future. It may be that you need help with more effective communication; to help become a 'couple' again; to identify negative patterns in the relationship or even support when there is a decision to end your relationship.
Whatever your needs are I can provide help and support for you both as a couple or an individual.
Psycho-Sexual Therapy (PST)
Some people may have the thought that talking about their sex lives' to a stranger may be too embarrassing or too difficult to do, but I offer a safe, accepting and confidential environment to help you to discuss openly what the problem is.
Sexual dysfunctions are not always purely physical there is the psychological aspect too and this is when sex therapy helps.
There can be many different factors to why sex is not working for you as a couple from lack of desire, erectile dysfunction, delayed ejaculation, premature ejaculation, vaginismus, dyspareunia and arousal disorder to name a few. These can be a factor of age, illness, menopause, relationship breakdown and other relationship problems.
After an in-depth assessment it would be decided if PST would be a suitable option for you to help with the problem. The treatment plans are individually structured for each couple or individual.
All the work in the room is a talking based therapy with any home tasks to be completed in privacy at home with your partner.
I am currently working closely with men and their partners with diagnosed with prostate cancer. For some men there is a loss of desire and loss of sexual functioning due to hormone replacement therapy. What some of the aims are for these dysfunctions is to not focus on what cannot be achieved; but to create a different sexual intimacy. This is based on acceptance, imagination, banishing sexual myths such as 'sex must end in penetrative intercourse', 'women only orgasm by penetration', and trying to create a more sensual sex life rather than sexual which is 'good enough' for both partners.
My other interest is how to keep having a loving sexual relationship in later years. Again, this sexual relationship may need adapting to accommodate body changes, lessening flexibility, hormone changes and to use imagination to create the 'good enough' sex life.
I also speak at health conferences and Macmillan well-being days about sex and intimacy. Most recently on how to bring up the subject of sex and intimacy in palliative care (when & how to do it);and also for Diabetes UK on how to keep a relationship and sex life 'good enough' when there is a diagnoses of a long term illness.
I have regular supervision both individually and in a group. I am a Registered Member (MBACP) of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). I abide by their codes of ethics and I am working towards my accreditation. I am also a general member of COSRT (College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists)
I hold an enhanced CRB disclosure and I am insured.
