About me

I am a warm, experienced counsellor working in Exeter. I have broad ranging experience working with both adults and adolescents and continue to value working with both equally. I came to counselling in 2005 having been a listening volunteer with Samaritans for 10 years and have many years' experience employed as a counsellor in a local secondary school.

What is counselling, what does it offer and how do I work?

Counselling offers an opportunity for you to explore your thoughts and emotions in a safe, confidential setting, the overall aim being to work towards living in a way which is more satisfying and resourceful.

People seek counselling for many reasons. Some are feeling depressed, anxious, having difficulties in relationships or are battling addictions they do not feel able to control. Some come because they feel sad and empty inside and others because of feelings of guilt or low self-esteem. Mostly, people seek counselling because they feel stuck, unsatisfied or lost in their lives.

Counselling may be concerned with addressing and resolving specific problems, offer support in decision making or coping with a crisis, assist in improving relationships with others or provide a place where inner conflict can be voiced and worked through. My role, whilst always respecting your values and capacity for choice, is to help you explore whatever it is that is troubling you, and through our work together, facilitate any changes you may wish to make.

My approach is non-judgemental and aims to be empowering for you. The relationship that develops between us is a very important part of the process - being able to feel relaxed, safe and understood is central to our work. I offer a warm, accepting environment in which we can explore whatever you bring.

I appreciate that finding the right counsellor can be difficult so offer a free initial appointment. This gives you the opportunity to meet me, to hear something of how I work and to see how it feels. This initial meeting isn't a counselling session but an opportunity for you to let me know something of what has been going on for you and why you are considering counselling. There will be ample time for you to ask questions/talk through any queries you may have and then together we will decide if counselling is right for you. If you choose to continue we will arrange to meet on a regular basis. I can offer short or longer term counselling depending on your needs.

I welcome informal enquiries.

"For the first time I've felt safe enough to 'go there'. Your support has been invaluable".  Female 65

"Coming to see you has enabled me to move beyond the pent-up feelings I held regarding the loss of my father and previous work situation.  It helped immensely to talk to someone outside of my social circle who was able to 'hear me'".  Male 40

"Thank you so much for the guidance and encouragement you gave me during my counselling sessions with you.  You were always friendly and welcoming which made thee sessions with you feel relaxed and not at all daunting.  I have learnt a lot about myself over the past few months and you have provided me with invaluable skills and knowledge which I know will be of benefit to me both now and in the future.  I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending you to others".  Female 57

"In simple words, I am happy with the woman I have become.  This journey with you has been a huge factor in that and I am forever thankful you Karen".  Female 28

"I had never considered counselling but following a quite intense bout of anxiety and self-doubt, I decided to take the leap.  Karen helped me to elucidate patterns of negative thinking and offered practical strategies to loosen the grip of my anxiety.  With her support, I have been able to look back over my experiences in a different light and as a result, I now feel inspired, grounded and capable.  Karen is affable, patient and extremely compassionate which really helped me feel at ease; for the first time I was able to 'find my voice'.  I can't thank you enough and am extremely grateful for the incredibly insightful experience".  Female 26

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
