About me
Hi. My name is Karen. Thanks very much for looking at my profile. I hope you find the following pages helpful.
I am working in-person face to face and also offering online therapy services to include FaceTime sessions and telephone sessions which can be accessed by you via your smart phone or iPad or computer.
I offer an initial 15 minute free introduction chat.
Alternatively, call or email me to arrange an initial consultation session to discuss the problems you are experiencing in more detail and how I may be able to help.
You may know what Counselling and Psychotherapy are and have a good idea of what the issue(s) are you need help with, or at the opposite end of this, you may not know what's led you to this point. Perhaps you feel something is wrong or you just feel 'bad' and these feelings don't go away, or you don't feel anything at all! You may not know what help is out there and where to begin looking. Here is a starting point.
I often find that many people who seek Counselling do so for reasons that are common to many. You may be wanting a safe and confidential space to speak about a problem causing difficulties or distress in your live. You may feel as though can't speak to those who are involved in your problem or those closest to you and you need someone outside of your lives, someone separate and unbiased to listen to you and help you to make sense of things, who will not make judgements about you or your situation. You may want to gain some understanding of yourself and your relationships and patterns that have developed overtime and how to make necessary changes. You may not have a problem as such that you want to discuss but rather want to understand yourself better and develop your self awareness, often trainee counsellors or other professionals contact me for this reason. What ever the reason that has brought you to this website, I hope you find this information helps you to make an informed decision about what Counselling and Psychotherapy is, what it can help with and some information about me and how I work.
The aim of counselling and psychotherapy can be different for each individual but here are some areas in which counselling and psychotherapy may help; relationship difficulties; family problems; stress/anxiety; depression; loss and bereavement; low self esteem; traumas of childhood and abuse; eating difficulties; self identity.
Some people come to counselling and psychotherapy on a short term basis, others come for much longer. What is important is that you choose a counsellor who feels right for you and who you feel comfortable with (this does not necessarily happen straight away and does not mean you will always feel comfortable, however, you will often feel the 'fit' between you and the person is right). It is also a really good idea to check the level of qualification and years studied, their experience, whether the Counsellor is registered with a recognised body i.e. BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy or UKCP (United Kingdom council for Psychotherapists); if the Counsellor has had their own Counselling as part of their own development, whether their work is supervised.
Please see more about me and the service I offer below.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a qualified Psychotherapist trained to Masters level having completed my MA in Integrative Psychotherapy. My training was for five years at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute, (SPTI). Prior to this, I spent three years completing a BSc (Hons) psychology degree. I am a member of the UK Council for Psychotherapists (UKCP) and my work is guided by their ethical codes of practice as well as the SPTI. I undertook my own in-depth Counselling/therapy for the duration of the course and beyond to help me gain self awareness needed to be a therapist and to be able to sit with you to experience what it is like as a client, in the other chair, so to speak (although every clients experience is unique).
I am currently working in private practice with adults (18-65). I have also worked in Higher Education with Children and young people (16-18). I absolutely loved this work too, being able to make a difference, at this young age is hugely satisfying. I have worked with many issues that young people face including bullying; self harm; eating difficulties; loss; self identity; sexuality. I have also worked in the NHS for 4 years working with people living with long-term illness and the emotional impact this has on their lives.
If you decide to get in touch, you will be offered an initial appointment, so that we can meet each other and get an idea of what you wish to explore in therapy, whether therapy can help and whether we want to work together.
Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
