Mental illness and stress related conditions are on the increase, one in four of us will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year. (Mind.org) There is more uncertainty, more pressure to be perfect and succeed and less community connection. Generally stress precipitates seeking help. Counselling is a safe confidential place to explore, understand and gain effective coping tools and techniques to deal with the stress we are under.
Talking therapy helps. How? Scientifically, when you express your thoughts and feelings you can process the information from the primitive fearful, anxiety and worrying area of your brain to the rational thinking part of your brain. When you understand something you no longer fear it.Talking to someone who is impartial and won’t judge will help to calm your emotional arousal down and help you to objectively clarify your troubling situation.Working with me to find alternative options to your problems with new understanding and improved coping strategies will help you back on the road to wellness.
I’m passionate about my work and vocation as a counsellor. My approach is collaborative, friendly, down to earth, educational and humanistic.I draw my counselling skills from my professional education and personal and professional experience and find Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) a central influence to my work.
I offer a free no obligation first session to see if we are suited to one another and to find out if I will be able to support your issues. Taking the leap of faith and making contact is the first stepping stone to your recovery.
I believe everyone has the right to be who they really are .... unique, talented and whole no matter what life throws at them.
I want to encourage and capitalise on the client's resources and abilities and to highlight their brilliance.
Counselling isn't a luxury or for mad sick people! It's an absolute requirement especially when your emotional needs are not being met and you feel overwhelmed with life in general. Sometimes it is necessary to have support to help you to see the wood for the trees, in a confidential setting which is being held by a professional who is impartial and is trained to cope with these areas.
My own journey into counselling and thus becomming a counsellor is testimony to this. As humans when we become stressed, anxious and fearful we can develope some very unhealthy behaviours to help us deal with our problems. Unhelpful behavioural habits and unhelpful thinking errors can begin to disturb us and we find ourselves caught up in a cycle of distress.
Finding out how we work and behave and where it comes from through therapy can have a healing benefit in itself. 'When you understand something you no longer fear it.' Sometimes this is enough to move someone forward but often their behaviour(s) need to change as well. I will, where appropriate support the client to challenge their unhelpful behaviours through exposure and response prevention field work. Placing myself into the clients world can help me to really get to grips with how they are experiencing themselves which then gives me the opportunity to model to them how the real world operates. The feed back I have received from my clients, often say, this is where the real work and change has taken place.
