Karan Cunningham FD Registered (MBACP)
East Riding Of Yorkshire
Hi, I am a professionally qualified, Integrative Counsellor. I provide a welcoming, respectful, friendly and non-judgemental approach.
I highly regard the benefits of counselling, and believe that it has the potential of being a positive 'life changing' experience.
I have experience of working with both adults and young people, I offer both short and long term therapy, depending on your individual needs and to be discussed and agreed with you.
From time to time in our lives, we are affected by personal difficulties such as loss, stress/anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties. We may feel alone, confused and afraid. It is also possible that events which happened to us in our past, can still have a negative hold on us in the present.
Not knowing what to do or how to respond to such feelings and emotions can make us feel helpless and stuck.
As a counsellor I am professional trained to help you to unpack these difficulties and assist you to find your own way forward. If we decide to work together, I will help you explore and clarify what is happening in your life and support you to find the solutions/answers to the difficulties you face.
Many clients find that having someone to talk to and being truly heard, can in itself, be a very powerful and healing experience.
I understand that taking the first steps towards counselling can seem scary and even overwhelming. I will endeavour to help you feel at ease and will always work at your pace.
* Please feel free to call me or email me if you have any questions I may be able to help with *
My therapy room is located within the peace and comfort of my own home in Hessle, East Yorkshire, with private parking available. My home is just a five minute walk from Hessle bus station, making it easily accessible for those who use public transport.
The room itself has been designed to aid the therapeutic experience by creating a relaxed, calming and spacious environment.
Training, qualifications & experience
As an Integrative counsellor, I incorporate theories and techniques from different approaches such as; Person Centred, Gestalt, Jungian, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Having a Integrative approach allows me to tailor the therapy to each individuals specific needs.
The emphasis of my approach is the relationship between client and counsellor. Overwhelming evidence and personal experience, proves this to be the single most important factor to a successful therapeutic outcome.
Some of the areas I work with include:
Anxiety and Depression (which also includes), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic attacks, Stress, Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Postnatal depression.
I have several years experience of working directly with those affected by anxiety and depression, with a particular specialist knowledge of working with those affected by postnatal depression.
Counselling for Young People
In the past few years, I have worked at a specialist young persons counselling service.
I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand, the effectiveness that therapy can have in the life of a young person.
Young people may experience a wide range of difficult emotions or situations, in which counselling could be helpful. These may include feelings of confusion, loneliness, peer-pressure or low self-esteem. They may also be facing difficult or challenging relationships or be experiencing bullying. They may be struggling under the pressure of exams or making career choices. They may also be having anger outbursts and are not sure how to manage them.
The experience I gained working a specialist counselling environment has enabled me to learn principals and practice which are specific to counselling young people.
If you are a young person and feel that counselling may be what you need, you can call or email me and we can discuss confidentially, what might be the next step for you.
I have worked within the caring profession for over 28 years and have experience of working with clients suffering with dementia, drug and alcohol related difficulties, mental health problems, physical and learning disabilities. I was also one of the founders of a highly successful local charity which provides support and advice to women and their families who are affected by anti and post-natal depression.
As well as working privately, I also work for one of the major providers of counselling for NHS patients in Hull.
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP), and adhere to its Codes of Ethics and Practice. The register of counsellors and psychotherapists is a scheme set up by the Department of Health and is administered by an independent body, accountable to parliament. The scheme means that for the first time, members of the public can choose a counsellor or psychotherapist belonging to a register approved by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care.
I also receive monthly professional supervision from a BACP accredited supervisor, as in line with BACP recommendations.
I hold a current enhanced CRB certificate.
