About me

Psychological trauma is at the root of many mental health conditions such as anxiety & depression.  Sometimes people are aware of specific events that may have caused the problem, but many others are unaware of how events in their life can affect psychological wellbeing.

I am a psychological therapist accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK and Ireland EMDR Association.  I offer a confidential service based in Cheltenham using the most effective trauma treatments such as EMDR and CBT, leading to significant and long lasting change.  After a career firstly in the military and then in commerce, I have retrained in a field where the sole aim is to relieve psychological distress in others.

This distress can take many forms, and usually manifests itself as stress, depression or anxiety and problem behaviours such as addictions, compulsions or relationship and sleep issues. Identifying, understanding and treating the root causes of these symptoms can lead to personal change that is transformational and long lasting.

I work as an integrative therapist, which means that I draw on approaches from a number of traditions (psychodynamic, person centred, CBT), including a powerful and evidence based therapy called Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). This is an internationally approved treatment for all kinds of psychological trauma arising from accidents, assaults, natural disasters and bereavements, to the traumas that may be experienced in childhood. It also doesn't have to be a major trauma - for example, there are many adverse life events that can lead to deep seated anxiety and depression, which can be treated using the same approaches. I have a special interest in treating veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) arising from military service.

I work in an empathic and non-judgemental way with my clients, in order to facilitate a process of healing and change. I also believe in empowering my clients by describing in clear terms what they are experiencing and what the process of change involves. The BACP ethical framework underpins my therapy practice which maintains a strong focus on client safety and confidentiality, and always acting in the client's best interests.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Quick resolution of nightmares and other sleep issues - please contact me to discuss this exciting approach which I am currently researching for use with combat veterans.

Nightmares can be very frightening and have a significant impact on sleep quality and overall functioning. They can also be repetitive and linked to traumatic or adverse life events from the past. The good news is that there is a very effective technique that you can learn that will permanently stop your old nightmares, and provide you with the tools to deal with any future ones. This skill can be taught in a single 50 minute session, and you can then implement the idea immediately to stop your nightmares.

Fees

Fees are £60 per session which last 1 hour, though I do offer a limited number of concessionary rates. Please contact me to discuss further.

At the first session we will explore your needs and how I will be able to help you, and to ensure that you are comfortable working with me.

A great deal can be accomplished in relatively few sessions and I will be able to give an indication at the first session how many sessions I think may be required.  My aim is for you to complete the work in the fewest sessions possible, and for significant change to occur in your life, rather than to keep you in therapy for an indefinite period.

Further information

Anonymous quotes from my clients:

"I was introduced to EMDR which at the time did not seem to be remotely connected with what I thought I needed. However, the results were quite astonishing. My thought processes are now much more targeted and clear, being able to dismiss damaging urges at will is a tremendous relief - a freedom I have not had for a long time." A (former) compulsive gambler.

"I started seeing Justin to undertake EMDR therapy due to past anxieties and traumas.  Admittedly, I was nervous for the first visit, though upon meeting Justin this began to dissipate pretty quickly and I felt secure and comfortable.  A lot of my issues were related to my family and past and by working through the EMDR therapy, I have managed to reconnect not only with my family, but myself also.  My confidence has increased and for the first time I am beginning to feel secure in my own skin.  I had many issues in social environments and settings, with my anxieties had completely taking control of me.  By working with Justin, I have been able to take back that control and it has completely changed my life!   The world does not seem such a daunting and scary place anymore, I can make new friends, re-connect with the old and just begin to enjoy life.  My constant anxieties have been reduced or eradicated and are now completely manageable, something I cannot quite believe.  I really am eternally grateful.  Thank you."  Anon.
