About me

Welcome to JPS Counselling, Are you finding life difficult at the moment? I can provide you with a safe place to talk. I offer individual counselling within a non-judgmental and genuine professional relationship, and I strive to understand your world with warmth, patience and compassion. I am open to everyone, clients come to see me from all walks of life. I offer a free initial half an hour phone/video meeting and I practice in Frome.  My counselling room attached to my home. I believe that the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and the client is the "key" for positive growth and change, and if we have a trusting relationship then we can move towards developing our full potential. You might be experiencing some kind of emotional distress, whether through a life experience, or maybe you are experiencing low self-esteem. You might be having issues such as anxiety or depression, or you might be struggling to come to terms with the impact of them from the past. It might be that you would like to change things in your life, or you may find yourself generally feeling unhappy or uncomfortable and aren't quite sure why. These feelings and experiences can become very overwhelming and difficult to deal with on your own.

Where I offer a warm non-judgmental and a genuine professional relationship, I aim to provide you an environment of acceptance where you will feel safe to talk and explore your experiences and feelings privately and confidentially, in a calm and discreet setting.

I strive to ‘meet’ you and understand your world through your eyes with warmth, patience and compassion. I aim to work at your pace with a non-directive approach, this means free from advice and judgement. This in turn, can help you to find your own answers that are right for you.

How counselling can help?

I am offering phone or video counselling to all who want to be seen during this time of social distancing. The first session initial session is a 20 minute FREE of charge appointment either during the initial contact, or arranged appointment.

Many clients come with different issues and problems, these range from trauma, relationship difficulties, divorce, work related issues, self esteem and confidence issues, loss and bereavement to diagnosed mental health issues like depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder and bipolar.

The counselling I offer, is a space to explore and untangle your difficulties and areas of your life that are troubling you, so that life becomes more clear and you can begin to make sense of your life and how you want to move forward. Friends or families maybe supportive, but it is sometimes difficult to confide in the people closest to you.

Together, we aim to bring about empowerment, so that you can make the right choices for yourself rather than being influenced by the outside world. It can be helpful to talk to a professional, who is not personally involved in your life without being judged or told what you should or should not feel about the way you do, because it is all about you, your own experience in your life, in your own unique way.

How I work that can help you with your answers?

As a Person-Centered counsellor, I strive to be genuine, accepting and understanding within the therapeutic relationship to help with exploring your thoughts, feelings and experiences. I believe that for self-healing to occur, it is through the relationship that is the key, so that you can find the resources and answers to your issues and problems. I believe that every individual has their own internal resources we need for personal growth, and a more fulfilling and satisfying experience of life. I strive to help you to uncover these resources to find your own answers, empowering you to develop self-belief towards a greater feeling of self-worth. The approach I use is known classically as Client Centered Therapy, this was developed by the humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers back in the 1950s.

I work in a way that respects you as an individual and your values and beliefs.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

What to expect in your First Initial session:

Please contact me for an initial 20- 30 minute meeting free of charge. This gives you an opportunity to talk over any concerns or problems and we can both decide together if we want to continue the counselling journey.

If we both choose to go ahead, we will discuss a series of 50-60 minute meetings usually each week, and we can both find a mutually agreeable time and day. The pattern of attendance can vary dependent on particular needs. This will be part of an agreed contract that I will discuss with you at our first initial appointment. Generally I work on an ‘open ended’ basis, but we work with your goals and time frame that feels right for you.
