About me

Hello, my name is Julie and at this time I can offer both internet and face to face counselling and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

As an experienced qualified counsellor, I aim to provide a safe confidential and warm environment for all my clients and understand that starting counselling can sometimes be overwhelming or may even feel like the last resort. As we are often afraid of being judged or a fear of learning that there's something terribly wrong with us.

Counselling gives us the opportunity to discuss problematic issues that maybe affecting our ability to cope with life, especially after such a difficult time, just talking to someone confidentially who is not a friend or relative can make all the difference. Counselling is not about giving advice, or telling you what you should or shouldn't do, but it is about understanding your experiences and feelings without making judgments and to accept "you the way you are".

As a therapist I work with adults and young people and believe that every person is unique and has the capability of realizing and understanding their full potential.

I can offer both short and long term counselling to individuals to suit your needs and my practice is based in a lovely outbuilding in Hornchurch.

Appointments can usually be arranged at fairly short notice. I am available Monday to Friday, including evenings.

Training, qualifications & experience

I began my training in 2006 and gained a BA(Hons) in counselling and Psychotherapy. My core training is in the Person-Centred approach and initially started counselling at MIND, a mental health charity in 2008. Then moved onto work at Havering and Brentwood Bereavement Services counselling both adults and children. I have experience of counselling in numerous schools and facilitated group therapy for adults with disordered eating. I am currently working in private practice and also for Pinches Charity, counselling adults and young people.

I have a keen interest in personal and professional development and gained certificates and additional training in Art Therapy, CBT, Bereavement, The Power of Self Esteem, boundaries, Anti-Discriminatory Practice & Diversity, Ethical Dilemmas and Childhood Trauma. I am currently studying for my counselling Accreditation with the BACP.

Along side my counselling I gained hands-on experience in working with families and individuals as a care support worker for Havering Crossroads, a leading respite care charity. This work enabled me to understand the everyday experiences and difficulties that carers face on a daily basis, while caring for family members with disabilities, dementia and strokes.

As a Registered Member of The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I am bound by their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Level 2 Certificate in Theoretical and Personal Development in Counselling Practices.

BA (Hons) (First Class) in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Person-Centred).

Certificate in Person-Centred Art Therapy Skills.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

My Approach

The counsellor or psychotherapist in this approach aims to provide an environment in which the client does not feel under threat or judgement. This enables the client to experience and accept more of who they are as a person, and reconnect with their own values and sense of self-worth. This re-connection with their inner resources enables them to find their own way to move forward.

The counsellor or psychotherapist works to understand the client’s experience from the client’s point of view, and to positively value the client as a person in all aspects of their humanity, while aiming to be open and genuine as another human being. These attitudes of the therapist towards the client will only be helpful if the client experiences them as real within the relationship, and so the nature of the relationship that the counsellor and client create between themselves is crucial for the success of therapy.
