Areas of Work
I deal with a wide range of psychological and emotional issues such as Relationships, Addictions, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Fear Phobias and Panic and Bereavement. I have particular experience working with the overweight and obese to achieve weight management. This list is not exhaustive please check my BACP UKCP profiles for the complete list of issues I have experience and or an interest in working with.
“Transactional Analysis (TA) is a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and change” (UKATA).
The Philosophical Principles of TA are People are OK, Everyone has the capacity to think and People decide their own destiny and these decisions can be changed.
Transactional Analysis is a therapeutic modality with its own governing bodies (European Association of Transactional Analysts & The United Kingdom Association.
Eric Berne, the Founder of Transactional Analysis, was particularly keen on changing psychotherapy in a number of ways that at the time were seen as radical. One of these was to teach the client the theory so that they could use and operate the theory on their own behalf thus upon completion of the contract the therapist is no longer required. This reduces the inequality between the therapist who has the training and the lay client. Berne achieved this by keeping TA Language simple with simple accessible models. Simple means easy to get the hang of in this context and does not mean simplistic.
The other principle that Eric Berne implemented was the use of contracts and so this means that it is clear who the parties are who are working together, what the work is that they are doing, how long it will take, what the goal or outcome is, how they will know that the goal and outcome has been reached and what the benefit will be to the client.
Finally Berne was particularly keen on the concept of cure and he stressed that a TA practitioner's job was to “cure the patient” as oppose to make progress! He described this as breaking free from the old childhood Script and “putting a new show on the road”.
It is important to remember people who come to therapy are often already functioning well in many areas of their life and want to enhance their functioning.
