Josephine McDonnell MBACP & MNCS (ACC) - Ballymena Counsellor/Psychotherapist
Ballymena North Business Centre

Hello and welcome to my profile .......I view good mental health not only essential but paramount in order to create a positive work life balance and maintain healthy relationships ...My background has been in business both private and public, my extensive experience in the business world has given me an unique insight into the problems people face in the work place today. Working with many employees through EAP Agencies, patients in GP settings and students at College has gained me valuable experience.......a lot of my day to day work focusses on:
- social anxiety/depression
- couple/relationship/family issues
- addictions - sex- gambling-alcohol-drug
- bereavement & loss
- career change/confidence building
- stress/ bullying in the work place
The above issues can be very distressing, however with appropriate therapy intervention you can bring control back into your life, thus giving you hope and the freedom to make healthy choices in life.... Everyone wants to be happy and yet much of our time is spent chasing happiness versus being happy. As your counsellor/psychotherapist I would like to help you work through difficult times in a safe, comfortabe, confidential, reflective space in a caring non-judgemental environment where you can talk what is troubling you, this will give you the opportunity to think and talk about yourself and concerns in a way you often can't do with family, friends or work colleagues.
Relationship disharmony can leave you feeling lonely, disappointed and unsure what to do. In some cases relationships may not be fulfilling your expectations which can impact on your happiness and life satisfaction. Some couples are prone to self criticism, blame/ shame and they find it difficult to generate feelings of safeness in a relationship, this can lead to anxiety, depression etc. Relationship counselling is focussed primarily on making sure issues are dealt with in a way that supports your health and well being. I will help you explore your needs and wants in a relationship and provide you with a pathway in finding a new way of loving.
I offer short and long term therapy, supporting you when you are vulnerable, challenging you when you're stuck. I use various therapies from an integrative perspective always bearing in mind and meeting the needs of each client to create a rich and meaningfully life worth living..
Research show that CBT is highly effective for many disorders but in particular anxiety, depression or a combination of both. I work on the belief that you know how to support yourself and you know how to solve your own problems... however sometimes you may experience unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving that prevents you from finding solutions to reach your goals and living life as you want to.
What is CBT
CBT is a proven success based goal orientated talking therapy which anyone can benefit from as it is easily applied to many every day situations. It is based on the idea that how we feel is directly affected by what we think and how we behave, CBT breaks unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving.
CBT is also excellent for raising self esteem, anger management or deciding on a new career path, here I would use coaching techniques to facilitate this process. I also integrate mindfulness into my psychological model which is excellent for stress reduction and anxiety. Mindfulness integrates the heart and mind, expanding into self compassion which is the cornerstone of building a sense of courage, resilience, life balance and emotional wellbeing all of which influences the brain and underpins all my teaching of CBT strategies.
