Dr John Moulder-Brown
I am a counselling psychologist, and I provide intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP). ISTDP is an evidence-based approach, designed to help you achieve a comprehensive and lasting resolution of your emotional problems and to reach your full potential.
We are all motivated to have loving, intimate relationships, and to experience fulfilment and happiness in our lives. However, most of us learn to unconsciously block the full range of our feelings with destructive defences. These include dismissing and minimising emotions and anxiety, avoiding eye contact, compliance/pleasing, negative thought processes such as worry, self-blame and perfectionism, and behaviours like passivity/helplessness, addictions and self-harm.
ISTDP has its roots in psychodynamic psychotherapy and, therefore, places a strong emphasis on identifying, understanding the origin of, and stopping the defences that cause you suffering and limit the emotional intimacy you experience with yourself and in your relationships.
ISTDP is unique in its moment-to-moment monitoring and regulation of physiological anxiety symptoms, for example muscular tension, dry mouth, changes in body temperature, nausea, jelly (weak legs), foggy thinking, blurred vision, ringing ears and dissociation. This focus helps to assure that your therapy proceeds at the right pace and moves in the right direction. Further, it is an important part of becoming the expert on your own internal experience, and learning to become your own therapist.
Please find further information about ISTDP on my website.
