John Kearney MBACP (Accred.) Registered Counsellor
Room 9, Martin House
2 Martin Street
I practise from my sole use therapy room in the centre of Brighouse. I have 11 years continuous experience as a Counsellor practicing in the private, health and public sectors.
I am comfortable with and have experience in providing short term client solution focussed therapy - (typically between 3 and 12 sessions), alongside open - ended therapy.
I would not suggest or advise how many sessions you might require to reach any desired outcome from your counselling, but would invite you to take control and manage the frequency and duration of our sessions in line with your requirements. This I see as being a strong component of effective counselling - to help facilitate your self empowerment in addressing the reason/s you are coming to see me.
My belief and ethos around my counselling style is that each and everyone of us is potentially our most valuable and effective resource. I do not claim any expertise and my role here is not about giving advice, suggestions or direct guidance, but to offer the space, time and understanding for you to access your inner resources. This, to help you find a way to deal with whatever it is you feel to be causing you upset or distress.
In addition to Counselling I also thoroughly enjoy providing Counselling Supervision for trainee and other qualified counsellors and psychotherapists.
Training, qualifications & experience
I trained as a Counsellor on a BACP accredited Diploma course at Thames Valley University in 2003-2005.
My early experience was in counselling at a Bereavement agency and a University counselling service.
I then spent 8 years counselling service users at an alcohol & substance use agency, the latter years of which I also began building up a private practice with clients referred to me through their workplace Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) or Occupational Health division.
2003-2005 - Post Grad. Diploma - Counselling. Thames Valley University.
2008 - Achieved Accreditation status with BACP (British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy).
2010-2011 - Post Grad. Cert. in Counselling Supervision - Leeds University.
I regularly attend workshops and training seminars as part of my on going and continuous professional development both satisfying my own learning interest and requirements and my professional obligation.
