I provide a professional psychological therapy service to adults and young people using the Human Givens approach, which is brief solution-focused therapy, offering fast, effective, practical help for people who may be depressed, anxious, phobic, suffering with addictions, anger disorders, relationship problems, or from the effects of a traumatic event.
Because the Human Givens approach is brief solution-focused therapy, clients are rarely seen more than six times and frequently fewer sessions are required.
In the first session the Human Givens approach will be explained and the client can outline the difficulty they would like help with and realistic targets are agreed. The first session is usually an hour and a quarter with subsequent sessions lasting an hour.
If the difficulty involved a traumatic event, there is no need to give details. The Human Givens approach does not require the therapist to know the details. Very effective outcomes can be realised without the client disclosing often traumatic and embarrassing personal circumstances. Relaxation and visualisation techniques are a common constituent of a typical Human Givens session.
A key component of the Human Givens approach is the use of no psychobabble. All explanations are given in easy to understand language. Clients often comment on how empowering it has been to actually understand why they are feeling as they do.

The Human Givens is a set of organising ideas that provides a holistic, scientific framework for understanding the way that individuals and society work. This framework encompasses the latest scientific understandings from neurobiology and psychology, as well as ancient wisdom and original new insights.
Any one of us can find ourselves emotionally distressed if our essential needs are not met in balance and the innate resources we possess have been damaged or are being misused. Emotional distress can manifest itself in many different ways, such as depression, anxiety disorders, addictive and compulsive behaviour patterns, phobias and PTSD.
Initially many people look for help from doctors, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and counsellors. All of us have the ability to heal and then flourish, given the right type of help. It is becoming increasingly apparent that an appropriate therapeutic intervention can be more effective than drug therapy. Human Givens practitioners are trained to deal effectively with these types of distress.
