About me

I'm an accredited counsellor and EMDR therapist with over 12 years of experience. Normally based in London and Eastbourne, I'm currently offering mostly online therapy which my clients are finding as effective as in person counselling. I would be happy to arrange an introductory session for you to see how it feels to work remotely.  I have a limited number of in person sessions available in Eastbourne only.

WHAT I OFFER

We all experience emotional difficulties or distress during our lives: stress, anxiety, depression, loss, feeling worthless, empty, uncertain or overwhelmed, particularly in these uncertain times. Sometimes these difficulties can be hard to deal with alone or with the help of friends or family.

Counselling with me is not about giving advice or me listening in virtual silence. It is about working actively together to enable you to explore your thoughts and feelings and gain valuable new perspectives about yourself and your situation. It is about helping you to resolve your difficulties yourself, find new ways of coping or give you a greater sense of control and choice in your life.

Everyone is different and your needs will be unique so I draw on a range of approaches to provide the right support for you. In the first consultation we will explore what brings you to counselling and decide if it feels right for you - the 'feel right' factor is important. I am a registered provider with major insurance companies. Please ask for further details.

EMDR / Trauma therapy

I am an experienced EMDR therapist. EMDR is recommended by NICE for trauma and PTSD. It stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing and involves a structured treatment which can achieve results often in fewer sessions that Trauma-Focused CBT. You can read more about EMDR on my website:

https://www.joannaheadcounselling.com

Research shows EMDR is also effective with issues such as anxiety, depression, phobias, low self-esteem, complex grief and even pain management.

Training, qualifications & experience

I hold a Post-Graduate Diploma in Humanistic Counselling and am a qualified EMDR therapist. I have also trained in bereavement counselling, Counselling for Depression and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT).

I am working with the NHS as a trauma therapist in response to the current pandemic but most of my work is in private practice.

Before training as a counsellor, I worked in the media industry for over 20 years. I worked with people from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures often in periods of emotional difficulty or uncertainty. It was from this experience I learned that sharing feelings, emotions and life events, being heard, accepted and respected can be a valuable healing and empowering experience.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
