As a CBT therapist, I use the CBT model to in therapy to understand how our life experiences affect the way we view ourselves, the world, and the future. As well as exploring how this changes and develops over our lifetimes, CBT also involves exploring how our thoughts and behaviour can interact and reinforce each other – how very understandable coping strategies can develop unintended side-effects that reinforce negative thoughts or beliefs and leave people feeling worse.
In therapy, I would aim to explore with you your historical and current experiences in order to understand why you're feeling the way you do, and to consider with you what changes might help you in going forward. I offer therapy which is relatively short-term, focused on making changes to relieve distress and develop a new approach to life difficulties.
It is easiest to explore difficult experiences in the context of a compassionate and nonjudgmental environment, and much of that environment stems from how we feel when relating to others. In addition, CBT is a highly collaborative form of therapy, where both therapist and client bring unique expertise to the therapy room and must work together to establish what the problem is and what the solution might be. As a result, not only will we make sure the the aims and duration of therapy is focused around your goals and priorities, I see the therapeutic and working relationship to be a cornerstone of therapy.
Although we would expect this relationship to be established over several sessions, I offer a reduced rate first session (see fees) in order that you can see if the way we relate to each other feels right to you. After that session we can discuss together whether you wish to continue in therapy, or whether I can offer any suggestions for other places you might seek help. In addition, if I have any concerns that CBT with myself is not the best course of action I will discuss those with you openly in order that you can make the best decisions for yourself.
My belief, one supported by a wide body of evidence about the efficacy of CBT, is that taking the time to explore and reflect in this way can lead to profound insights and can lead to significant and lasting change.

Choosing the right therapist can be stressful and difficult, and to make it easier for you to be sure you’re comfortable with your choice, I offer an initial session at a reduced fee of £20. This allows you to discuss your difficulties and goals, and what the right kind of therapy (and therapist) might look like. There’s no obligation to continue beyond that initial session if it doesn’t seem like the right fit – and I'm happy to discuss with you where you might be able to look next.
To give you a sense of if CBT is right for you, my website has some questions to consider before entering therapy - you can find that at https://www.jbrettcbt.com/is-cbt-right-for-you/
