About me

My name is Jo and I am a fully qualified Counsellor working with Adults, Young People and Couples in Exeter, Devon.

I hold an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling, a Post-Qualifying Diploma in Counselling Children and Adolescents and I have attended two further courses in Couples and Relationship Training.

Additionally I have completed more specific training in working with various issues many people experience, for example depression, anxiety and eating disorders, to name a few.

I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and you will find me on the BACP register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.

My training as an Integrative Counsellor means I am able to work in a variety of ways. This means I am really able to work with you and tailor our sessions together to work in a way that really suits you. You may just want to talk, and feel most comfortable with this, or you may want to work more creatively and find it easier to articulate yourself using art, or drawing or Sand-tray. My philosophy is rooted in Person Centred practice, but I work with T.A. Gestalt, Mindfulness or Psycho-Dynamic if I feel they are right for you.

My aim as your Counsellor is to work with you relationally. I believe it is your unique subjective experience that is central to our work together whatever approach I use.
I believe the Counselling process should work around valuing your individuality.

As a Humanistic Therapist I believe we all have the capacity to be the best we can be, and that ultimately we all want to move towards being happy and fulfilled.

Central to my philosophy is the importance of the relationship between the Client and the Counsellor. My aim is to provide you a safe, confidential space in which you can explore how you experience your world.

As a Counsellor I am trained to help you become more aware of how patterns, themes or experiences in your life may be affecting your current situation. My aim is to help you find a new path forward, encouraging you to consider new perspectives and find a way that works more positively for you.

Counselling can be very challenging, and at times we may work with more difficult or deep rooted issues. My approach is to be there for you, offering you support and guidance, and encouraging you to find ways to take care of yourself and promote your own well-being.

My goal as your Counsellor, ultimately, is to help you reach a place where you feel able to move forward in your life, without me, feeling you know yourself better, and are better for the changes you may have made.

I work with a whole spectrum of life issues, including, but not limited to;
-Stress
-Anxiety
-Bereavement
-Eating Disorders
-Self-Harm
-Suicidal Ideation
-Low self-esteem
-Depression
-Sexuality/Gender/LGBTQ

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Additional information

Our introductory session is an hour in length. This session will be an opportunity for you to get to discuss with me what you would like to achieve from Counselling, for me to introduce myself, and for you to decide if you feel I am the right Counsellor for you.
Adults; Unless otherwise agreed, our session time will be for one hour in duration. I am happy to work with you for a longer period, if this were your preference. Although it is usual for clients to attend Counselling on a weekly basis, if this is not achievable for you we can arrange fortnightly appointments, or even twice weekly. For our time together to truly benefit you it has to be manageable to suit your lifestyle and time commitments, and I am flexible.
COST; I charge 50.00 for the hour as my standard charge. This is payable at the end of each session.

Couples; I work with couples for either an hour or an hour and a half as I feel this length of session allows a much more in depth exploration of the relational issues and gives time for both individuals to be heard and listened to. COST; I charge 60.00 for the hour, or 80.00 for the hour and a half. This is payable at the end of each session.  Sessions can be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, to suit your needs.

Young People;
For Children and Adolescents I usually hold 45-60 minute sessions, although this can be changed if agreed. Again, this can be a flexible arrangement, and is based on meeting the needs of the Young Person, so if they would like to attend more, or less often, this will be in their control.
COST; I charge 50.00 for the session as my standard charge. This is payable at the end of each session.

*Reduced Rate; I am able to offer a limited number of places at a reduced rate. If you would like to be considered for this please do not hesitate to ask, and I will let you know if this is a possibility, or ask if you would like to be added to the waiting list.*
