I am a fully qualified therapeutic counsellor with a diploma in humanistic therapeutic counselling and am a member of the professional register of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, abiding by their code of ethical conduct.
Counselling involves sharing your feelings and experiences with a person who has been trained to provide a confidential space for you to explore these feelings without judging you. In everyday life we may achieve a level of support from talking to friends, partners or relatives, but we sometimes find this difficult or impossible. Perhaps we may not wish to burden our friends with our troubles, particularly if they have been ongoing for a long time and we feel like we 'should' have moved on, or we may find that our friend's desire to make us feel better prevents them from being able to allow us time to stay with difficult feelings. A counsellor is trained professionally to provide an non judgemental space and offers a safe supportive environment to enable you to connect with, and explore, thoughts and feelings at your own pace. There are no 'shoulds' in counselling, but an acceptance of your truth as you are experiencing it now. This kind of non judgemental, supportive attention from another human being who is fully present for you provides the conditions that are proven to enable the release of stuck feelings and stimulate your innate tendency toward psychological health and growth (like the natural tendency of a plant to grow given the right conditions of light, food and water). Trusting in each person's innate potential, knowing that deep down you know what you need and what is best for you (even if you seem to be unaware of that right now), my task is not to tell you what to do or how to be, but to help you find that awareness, to accompany and support you using my skills and abilities to empower you to access your own source of inner strength and well being.
I initially trained and qualified as a Shiatsu therapist (1993) and practised and taught professionally for many years. Shiatsu is a form of bodywork (acupressure) based on principles of ancient Chinese medicine which works not only with the physical form of the body but with life energy (chi) and its manifestation both mentally and emotionally. I learned that the body and mind are not separate entities (actually, this is something we are naturally aware of, for example when we refer to being guided by our 'gut feelings'). Sometimes thought patterns and emotions remain unprocessed and are stored in the body (which can create pain or discomfort) and it is often possible for these thought patterns and feelings to be accessed through attention to what our body is trying to tell us. This is especially useful when we cannot resolve our difficulties through thinking alone or we have stuck patterns of thinking or feeling that do not seem to shift.
My practice in Shiatsu enhanced and developed my awareness of mind/body energy and has resulted in an advanced empathic sensitivity which I bring to my counselling practice. This enables me to connect with felt experiences that you may not be able to express verbally and help you to access and work with these feelings in a meaningful way.
Prices and timing
My current fee for counselling is £40 per hour.
Therapeutic counselling works best when meetings are regular, usually weekly, and can be short term (a few weeks) or longer term depending on your needs. If you have a particular issue that you wish to work on in a focused way then short term counselling would be appropriate. For deep seated, or multiple issues or for developing self awareness, more time would be helpful.
I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation giving you the opportunity to find out a little bit more about my practice and to to ask questions to gather enough information to help decide whether I am the right counsellor for you.
Contact by phone or email, I will always respond within 24 hours.
Weekday appointments available.
