About me

Hi, I'm Jo, I established The Good Therapy Works, a private therapy practice specialising in Counselling, Clinical Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy.

Through therapy, my aim is to help you make a positive change.

I'm here to listen, offer you a safe space to explore past events and guide you forward or simply give you a place to be 'you', supporting you to get your life back on track and be the best version of the person you want to be.

How Could Counselling Help You?

Sometimes life, family or work related pressures, experiences of trauma or loss, or debilitating anxiety or depression become overwhelming. This is often when we stop being who we want to be, stop living life the way we want to live and sometimes we need some help to get ourselves back on track.

I provide professional counselling help and support to individuals; a confidential, safe place to talk, a space to 'be', to explore your thoughts and emotional reactions to events - past and present. Counselling provides an opportunity to find peace, or perhaps clarity, to understand and potentially make sense of hard to handle feelings such as sadness, guilt, shame, anger or vulnerability, feelings that may be dominating - and find a way forward.

What Next?

There are lots of really good qualified counsellors out there, we come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, different backgrounds, training and specialism and there's a whole range of different approaches to counselling. If it's your first time looking for a counsellor, I can understand how it may feel a little daunting.

Counselling can be an intense and very personal experience so finding the right person for you is important, meeting face to face or having a telephone conversation is likely to be your next step to finding the right counsellor for you.

You'll probably have a feeling whether I may be right for you after you have read through my profile, so when you are ready give me a call or drop me an email and we can set up an initial session and we can talk through what you want to get out of counselling. If you are comfortable and happy to continue we'll set up a further session so we can begin work together.

I am now offering some face to face sessions but also working online (Zoom) and over the telephone. I normally work with clients on a once weekly basis but do also offer fortnightly sessions too.

Please call me in confidence to find out more, and book your initial consultation.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Your sessions take place in a peaceful and comfortable space, in therapy rooms with beautiful uninterrupted views over the Somerset Levels. My practice offers a confidential space which offers a sense of calm to aid relaxation and wellbeing giving you time to explore past events and support you to in finding your way forward, taking steps one at a time to get you where you need to be.

Based in beautiful, rural surroundings on the edge of the Somerset Levels, 10 minutes from J23 of the M5, between Street and Bridgwater.

Background:

After years working for large organisations I recognised that 'people' are our most precious resource; often undervalued or not looked after with the care we may look after our possessions. Sometimes as individuals we become overwhelmed, our resilience and sense of who we are gets chipped away or even lost and we stop being the best version of ourselves. Our ability to cope with situations and relationships can diminish and we forget how easily our mental wellbeing can spiral out of our control, affect us, those around us and what we do.

It feels that now more than ever we need a level of mental resilience to get through the many different and often emotional life events. It's often quoted that 1 out of 3 of us will suffer some form of mental illness in our lifetime - a statistic I paid little attention to, until I recognised that I too was not immune. After returning to work following the birth of my first child I found myself paralysed by crippling anxiety, with no idea what was happening or how I could help myself 'so yes, it could happen to me too' I remember thinking! Over time and with support I worked to understand myself, recognised how I'd got to that point, thought about what I wanted out of life and slowly and steadily, step at a time I found my way forward and got my life back - I got 'me' back. So profound were my experiences I changed career - retrained, studied counselling, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy - I'm now a therapist!

Our culture of target driven performance and an ever increasing technological pace to do more pushes us from a place of acceptance and calmness to always wanting more, from others and from ourselves - there seemed to be a real absence of contentment. Life changing events happen and our level of resilience can easily go unchecked. Occasionally stuff happens which can destabilise us or even occasionally blow our worlds apart - the loss of a loved one, the breakdown of a relationship or career, in fact trauma of any kind takes a toll on our wellbeing and often before we realise.

I work with people of all ages across a range of mental health issues brought on by ever changing and challenging events. I specialise in trauma, general anxiety and depression as well as relationship issues, loss and bereavement. My approach is integrative, creative and above all solution focused. Working through past events, recognising their importance and acknowledging they do not need to define the future. For me therapy is about helping others find ways to reach the next place, one step at a time.
