I am a doctor of counselling in my eighteenth year in private practice (as at Dec 2015). During that time, I have helped more than 850 individuals with problems of anger, anxiety, depression, stress, self confidence, insecure attachment, and couple relationship problems. I get lots of testimonials from former clients about the benefits they gained from working with me.
I was originally trained as a Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapist (REBT), which is the original form of CBT. I then studied thirteen systems of counselling and therapy at diploma level; then completed my doctorate in counselling at the University of Manchester; and began to integrate all those systems into a new system called Emotive-Cognitive Embodied Narrative Therapy (E-CENT).
I work with both the aim of helping you to solve your practical problems, and also to heal your attachment style, so that you can feel better and function more effectively in all your relationships.
I see clients at my home in Hebden Bridge, for 45 minute consultations. (With couples, I often suggest double sessions because we share the time equally, and 45 minutes is often insufficient to allow both partners to cover their current concerns).
Training, qualifications & experience
I have a Doctoral degree in counselling. I also have: an MA in Education, which included a significant amount of psychology (Open University, 1994: 01908 653003); a Diploma (with Distinction) in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy (Rusland College, Bath, 2004: 01225 313184); a Professional Certificate in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (from the Institute for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, Bristol, 1999); plus a Primary Certificate in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy from the Albert Ellis Institute, New York. (Confirm with the Registrar of the International Society of Professional Counsellors, at ISPC Website.).
Here are my main accreditations/registrations:
♣ Licensed Fellow of the International Society of Professional Counsellors - (Confirmable at ISPC Website);
♣ CCC-Registered Counsellor - (Confirmable at Counselling CCC Website);
My Doctorate in Counselling is from the University of Manchester. (Confirm by email to: Dr William West or Dr Clare Lennie at the Education Faculty). This involved studying: (a) Approaches to mental and emotional health and psychopathology; (b) Counselling, psychotherapy and society; (c) Counselling in various contexts. In addition: (d) I studied current approaches to the teaching and learning of research ethics in counselling and related contexts; (e) I wrote my thesis on the subject in item (d); and in parallel (f) I began a study of how to model (or represent) the mind of the counselling client.

SCHEDULE OF FEES FOR FACE-T0-FACE CLIENTS
For new clients, commencing after 2nd April 2016, I offer a revised scale of fees, for simplicity, and to take account of the continuing atmosphere of austerity.
If you are unemployed, or on a state pension, I can see you for a fee of £40.00 per 45 minute session.
If you are employed, and earning less than £25,000 per year, before tax, I can see you for a fee of £50.00.
If you earn more than £25,000 per year, before tax, but less than £50,000, then I can see you for a fee of £60.00 per session.
And if you earn £50,000 or more per year, before tax, then I can see you for a fee of £70.00.
Those fees all refer to daytime appointments, on Weds-Friday of each week. If you want an evening or weekend appointment, then the standard fee is £20 more than your weekday fee.
I now offer just four appointment slots per day – 10.00am, 11.00am; 2.00pm, and 3.00pm. This helps to ensure that I am in tip-top condition, physically and mentally, when I see you.
On alternate Saturdays I offer two appointment slots – at 11.00am and 1.00pm. I therefore offer a total of 12 appointment slots during the working week; and four Saturday slots per month.
Since nine or ten of my weekday slots are already routinely booked up, in advance, it is advisable to let me know immediately if you would like one of the remaining two or three slots.

I am also subject to both the ISPC and CCC Complaints Procedures. (See the *Accreditation and Ethics* page on this website.; and the ISPC Website; and also the Counselling CCC Website).
My style of working is more like a "friendly philosopher" and "wise guide", combined with a "warm parent figure" progressing to "companion" (over time), rather than a "cold and clinical doctor". I use an integrated range of thinking and narrative frameworks to conceptualize client problems, as described on the 'What is E-CENT?' page. Some of these frameworks and techniques are original creations of E-CENT, and some come from Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT/CBT), supported by elements of Transactional Analysis (TA), Zen Philosophy, and other modern narrative therapies, including neo-Freudian conceptualizations, like the British Object Relations school (e.g. Klein and Fairbairn); and the Attachment Theorists: Bowlby, Main, etc.
I also teach that you are a body-mind, and that you cannot have a healthy mind in an unhealthy body, so I teach lots of ideas to do with promoting holistic healthy functioning.
My aim is to help you to resolve your current, adult problems, and/or old, historic problems from your childhood. I provide an environment in which you can learn and grow, briefly, or longer term. Ideally I would like to help you to "become your own coach/counsellor" in the shortest possible amount of time, so you can manage your own life better; resolve your own problems; and pursue your own goals. However, this sometimes takes more than a few sessions. An integral aspect of the journey is the development of a secure attachment capability in you.
What I do best is to help you to reframe and resolve your problems, to become more secure and Adult, and to tenaciously pursue your goals in every area of your life, in a surprisingly brief period of time; weeks rather than months in most cases; but sometimes it takes longer. To discuss possibilities, or to get more information, please email Jim Byrne, Doctor of Counselling, at ABC Coaching and Counselling Services.
