About me

All stages of life have the potential to throw up difficult issues, feelings and situations.  It is not uncommon to feel that you cannot cope, cannot see a way forward, to feel dissatisfied, resentful, or lost.  People sometimes believe that the fact they are struggling means that they are in some way weak and that they should be able to cope alone.    However for those who find their way to counselling/psychotherapy, the exploration of their struggles in an impartial environment away from the pressures and expectations (the ’oughts’ and ‘shoulds’ ) found in the rest of their lives is immensely beneficial.

It can be daunting going to counselling/psychotherapy for the first time.  I do all that I can to try and ensure that I provide a welcoming and calm environment, working to develop an open and trusting relationship, so that you can be freed up to explore the difficulties you are facing.  I seek to provide support to help you develop greater understanding of yourself or others, awareness of what makes you tick and why you may be finding things hard.  I know that as individuals we may live in very different social or cultural situations, with our own unique history that has shaped our reactions to events and options for change.  I value this diversity and work hard to understand your unique world, to help you identify a way forward that is truly right for you.  I will respect your choices and decisions.

In this environment, I have seen clients live their lives in ways that they find healthier, more effective and more fulfilling.  Clients can make huge changes within themselves, feeling freer to be who they discover they are, or coming to terms with things that cannot be changed.  They may make difficult decisions or just gain a greater awareness that makes a difference to how they feel.  Clients often report a sense of relief about being able to voice their thoughts and feelings rather than bottling it all up.  Difficult thoughts and emotions can lose some of their power once spoken. Clients are often surprised how, having commenced counselling or psychotherapy, relationships shift, thinking processes change, they feel more at peace, their confidence grows.

Neither Counselling nor Psychotherapy is the panacea to all difficulties – but the opportunity of a space in which to reflect can be invaluable.

It is important that you find the right counsellor.  I am always happy to talk by phone or email, to offer a bit more of a sense of who I am and how I work, before deciding whether to make a first appointment. Alternatively you may just wish to take the plunge and arrange an initial appointment.

Training, qualifications & experience

Qualifications

  • 1999 Post-Graduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling (Nottingham Trent Uni)

  • 2005 Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling Supervision

  • 2006 Certificate in On-Line Counselling

  • 1990 Graduate of the Institute of Personnel and Development

I am a senior accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, I am registered with the Accredited Voluntary Register (number 00948), and I am BUPA recognised.

Whilst my core training is in the Person-Centred model, I have some additional post qualification training in working creatively, in CBT ideas and techniques, Mindfulness, Brief Solution Focussed Therapy and in working with trauma. I also draw upon ideas from other approaches.  I believe counselling and psychotherapy is most effective when working holistically with thoughts, feelings and behaviour.  As such I try to identify with clients, their skills, resources and way of being in the world, so that we can work together in a way that will be most helpful.

I have worked as a counsellor in Local Government, the voluntary sector, a service for young people aged 14 +, and as a student counsellor at a local Further Education/Higher Education college.  I have also worked as a Supervisor at Nottingham Counselling Service.

In the past, I managed a staff counselling service within Local Government, and prior to training in Counselling and Psychotherapy, I worked for 12 years in Human Resources.  As a result, I have an interest in workplace wellbeing and the interaction between work, stress and mental health.

I take referrals from: people who contact me directly through websites such as this; word of mouth; ‘employees’ referred through their workplace, Employee Assistance Programmes or Human Resource or Occupational Health specialists; GPs and clients accessing counselling through private healthcare schemes (such as BUPA) and counsellors/psychotherapists in training at local colleges and universities.

I have worked with clients across a diverse spectrum in terms of background, faith, culture, race, sexuality and gender identity, as well as people living with a range of disabilities. I have worked with young people (aged 14+) and adults, and have experience providing counselling/psychotherapy across the very wide range of issues that we may all have to face at different points in our lives.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have also worked with clients on issues relating to loss, parenting, disordered eating; identity; the emotional impact of health issues (such as diagnosis of a serious illness, living with ME, chronic pain, and disability):  pregnancy, birth, and infertility; decisions regarding work or career direction;  the impact of trauma; harassment and loneliness and isolation.  I have also worked successfully with neurodiversity.

Sometimes people come with a very clear focus on what they want to explore – for others there may be a range of issues, or just a generalised sense of dissatisfaction or unhappiness.
