Jean Satterthwaite MBACP [Accred]
I am a qualified Counsellor and Relationship Therapist, working with both individuals and couples from my consulting room in Wokingham. I offer an empathic, confidential environment in which people can explore their worries and feelings openly without feeling judged or criticised. I am an accredited member of BACP and adhere fully to the association's code of practice and ethics.
Approaching counselling for the first time can be a daunting and confusing prospect. The relationship between you and your counsellor will be at the heart of the therapy and therefore it is important to choose the right person for you.
I believe that counselling can provide a unique opportunity to explore and reflect upon difficult experiences or dilemmas with somebody who is neither friend nor family and therefore won't take a position. The counselling process enables people to look at their situation from different perspectives and new angles.
I am very happy to have an initial telephone consultation to discuss the issues you want to address and what I can offer as a therapist.
My integrative training allows me to work with people using a range of therapeutic models in a way that best suits them. I offer short-term and open ended counselling. This would be discussed as part of our initial counselling agreement and reviewed regularly together.
As a counsellor I work with people who are facing difficulties for many reasons including depression, anxiety, low self esteem, stress, bereavement, work issues, domestic violence, childhood abuse, unexpected life changes, relationship difficulties and breakdown. My aim as a counsellor is to help people make sense of the difficulties they are experiencing and to support them moving forward.
I am a qualified Relate counsellor.
Couple relationships go through difficulties for many reasons and at different stages of relationships. Relationships can be significantly affected by life events such as the birth of children, financial problems, redundancy or retirement; through affairs, sexual problems or because of a breakdown in communication over time. Sometimes problems have their roots in the past and sometimes couples develop negative or unhelpful repeating patterns of behaviour that leave one or both, feeling that they are going round in circles.
Couple counselling provides an opportunity for couples to talk openly and in confidence about the particular issues that are affecting their relationship, work towards better communication and strengthen the relationship.
For couples who decide that separation or divorce is the best or only outcome for them, couple counselling can significantly help negotiate the way forward more constructively, for them and for any children of the family.

I have worked for many years with individuals, couples and families experiencing problems for a wide range of reasons and this has given me a good insight into the kinds of issues that can cause adults great unhappiness and confusion in their lives, but also about individual resilience and how therapeutic input can make a big difference.
