About me

The only journey is the one within (Rainer Maria Rilke)...

...and those that suffer with anxiety know this only too well.  I work extensively, but not exclusively, with clients who live with anxiety, which is something that touches so many lives and can be so debilitating and frightening. Now more than ever, your internal world has to carry you and so many external anxieties, leading to a sense of isolation and abject fear in some.

Yet, every one of us has the capacity to live a more fulfilling life and to have close relationships in which we can accept ourselves, others and the circumstances of our lives.

I am a fully qualified and UKCP accredited, psychodynamic psychotherapist, academic tutor and supervisor, willing to work with you for as long as you need - short or long term. I have experience working with a variety of issues including generalised anxiety, health anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, couples work including supporting couples or individuals through separation and divorce, addiction, depression, bereavement, narcissistic abuse, domestic and sexual abuse (male or female). I am also available to work with people who are suffering from burn out or finding it difficult to cope with the stress and anxiety of their working environment.

Therapy can be incredibly healing and for some, life changing. I do not have the words to describe exactly what this might mean for you because it can mean different things to different people. What I do offer all of my clients is a safe, warm, compassionate, confidential and non-judgemental space.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING
My aim is to facilitate an exploration of your thoughts, feelings and behavioural patterns. My approach to the therapeutic relationship is to work with you to gain insight into what you may or may not know about yourself that could be holding you back and to identify what it is you want more of in your life, working with you towards achieving it. I see the therapeutic relationship between us as a partnership and an opportunity to understand the dynamic you bring to relationships (with yourself and others).

Our first session is an opportunity for us both to assess whether we are a ‘good fit’, no obligations.

COUPLES COUNSELLING

Sometimes relationships get stuck and neither party understand how to get past their issues. When working with couples, I offer a safe, impartial space to help you hear each other, to make sense of where you are disconnected and to connect again if that is what you both want.

I make myself available to both parties equally to discuss their issues. With this support you will learn to understand and communicate your feelings and needs more clearly, without conflict. You will learn to listen to each other, hear how you each feel and better understand the change you each need to make to improve the relationship.

I offer couples the option of ongoing counselling in 60 or 90 minute weekly sessions (usually 6 - 12 sessions are required). I also offer one off two hour 'crisis' sessions for couples who want this.

There is no one size fits all, if you prefer to methodically work through your relationship issues, then weekly sessions may suit you best. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the issues you are facing then an intense recovery session might be best, followed by some ongoing hourly sessions. We can assess your needs when you come in for your first session and go from there.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Masters in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy (1st class Distinction).

I am a Provisional Trainer and Supervisor (PTSTA).

I am a Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA) and fully accredited with the UKCP.

I have a Diploma in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Metanoia Institute)

I am an Academic Tutor on the MSc Integrative Psychotherapy at Metanoia Institute (affiliated with Middlesex University) and a Primary Tutor at The Link Centre in Sussex offering counselling certificates and other related qualifications.

I was a continuity tutor at TA East and Metanoia (2018 - 2022)

I was an honorary counsellor with Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust for one year between April 2016 - June 2017

I worked with Windsor and Maidenhead Counselling Services between 2013 - 2016

I ran a male survivors group in Berkshire.

I am a member of the following counselling and psychotherapy organisations: UKCP (UK Counsel for Psychotherapy), UKATA (United Kingdom Association for  Transactional Analysis) and EATA (European Association of Transactional Analysis).

My experience includes (but not exclusively) working with: anxiety, stress, depression, addiction, bereavement, low-self esteem, sexual abuse, narcissistic abuse, trauma and relationship difficulties.

I am a psychodynamic, relational psychotherapist. This means that I pay attention to the conscious, non-conscious, and unconscious communication between us to give me some understanding of your relationship patterns with yourself and others. Bringing these unconscious patterns to the surface can be transformational.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

How many sessions will I need?

Once the therapeutic relationship has started we will negotiate a specified number of sessions (most usually six to twelve) to begin with.  At the end of those six to twelve sessions we will review the work done so far and agree to continue or end. Some people have very specific issues that can be resolved in a six to twelve week time frame.  Others will need and/or want more time. Sometimes people ask me how long they will need to be in therapy to do the work they want.  My answer is always the same – “I don’t know”.

However when you and I decide to end, the process will be one of negotiation where we mutually agree a contract for ending.

Where are you?

I am based in a counselling and psychotherapy practice in Maidenhead, located in a quiet area where there is ample parking. During the Covid crisis, I use Zoom to see my clients virtually.

What about confidentiality?

I take confidentiality very seriously. There may be an exception to this if I believe that someone is at risk of serious harm, but my confidentiality policy will be discussed at our first meeting.

What is your approach to counselling and psychotherapy?

I offer a psychodynamic, relational perspective to my clients which means I primarily work to identify thoughts, feelings and behavioural patterns. I assess this through the counselling relationship we develop and I use this to understand and offer my clients insight into what relationship they have with them self and to bring to awareness their relationship patterns with others.

How can I get the most from my counselling?

  • Choose a therapist that feels right for you
  • Be engaged in your therapy and the process
  • Know that your therapist is not there to tell you what to do nor are they there to judge you so be as open and as honest as you can
