I acknowledge and am aware that seeking counselling support can feel a really daunting experience for a lot of people, who are looking for help. I know what it can feel like to be in that position having sought help in the past myself.
I appreciate that it can feel a big step in asking for help and to put trust in someone you have never met, especially with often upsetting and difficult issues. Such as sexual issues, sex problems, affairs and betrayals, communication and other relationship difficulties.
It can feel like we may have somehow failed or its a last resort in trying to resolve difficulties. I have helped many people like yourself who also felt unsure initially on what to expect and feelings of trepidation or embarrassment in asking for help.
By offering you a safe, confidential, trusting, neutral and non judgemental space I make that process as easy and reassuring as I can. I am happy to discuss any fears / concerns you may have. Often the hardest part is making that first contact, and attending the initial appointment can feel daunting. I will help to put you at ease and make that as comfortable as I can.
In my experience and feedback received by clients, once they have made that initial step they often find at the end of the first appointment those fears, embarrassments and concerns have gone.
Whether you are facing issues around sex and intimacy, relationship or family issues as a couple or perhaps individual difficulties in managing your anxiety, depression, low self esteem etc. I can help you to get things back to how you would like them to be.
I can and have helped many individuals and couples to work through a wide range of relationship issues such as, sex problems, affairs and betrayal, family issues, separation add divorce. I also work with individuals with issues such as managing anxiety, depression, low self esteem, feeling sad etc.
I am also qualified to work with young people aged 10+.
In addition through my work with Survive North Yorkshire I have 7 years experience of working with trauma, counselling adult survivors of child sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault.
I offer a professional, discreet, confidential, friendly and relaxed Therapy and Counselling service in York in a comfortable environment operating from a central location in York with easy access and on street parking. My services cover Psychosexual (Sex) Therapy, Couple / Relationship Counselling, Trauma Counselling and Young people Counselling.
Please email, phone or visit the website for further details and an informal chat.
I believe that the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client is all important and offer an empathic, trusting, neutral, warm, understanding, non-judgmental space.
By working in an integrative way (meaning that I work with a range of different theories), I am able to work in the best way that helps you the client. In my experience what works for one person doesn't for another, after all we are all different.
I hold Post graduate certificate in Psychosexual Therapy and the University Advanced Diploma in Couple Counselling obtained through the Relate Institute in Doncaster awarded through Hull University. I also gained certificates for working with Young people through Youth Access delivered through Relate. I hold an up to date enhanced DBS check (formely CRB) to work with young people and a safeguarding certificate awarded through Hull City Council. (See qualifications & training section for more information).
I trained and qualified as a Relationship Counsellor (Couple Counselling), a Young Person’s Counsellor (age 10+) and a Psychosexual Therapist with Relate Mid-Yorkshire. I have worked as a counsellor for Relate for 7 years working with individuals, couples and young people.
I currently work as a Clinical Supervisor and as an online / phone / webcam / Email counsellor with Relate head office. Delivering counselling support across the country to individuals and couples covering a wide range of issues from relationship difficulties, parenting, anxiety, depression, self esteem and family difficulties.
I am able to offer counselling in my practice by phone, webcam or face to face.
For the past 7 years I have also worked for the charity Survive in York as the male support co-ordinator providing support and counselling to adult survivors of sexual abuse.
My work over the years with Relate has given me the opportunity to work on a variety of projects including iRelate, an online service to Young People and another online project working with Parents of troubled teenagers. I am also a trained trainer and have delivered training to parents through Relate.
Counselling offers you a safe, confidential place to talk about your life and anything that might be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. It also allows you to talk with someone who is trained to listen and to help make changes when things get difficult. Sometimes it is difficult to say what is on your mind to others around you and counselling support gives you the opportunity to talk in confidence to someone who is separate from your everyday life.
Sexual issues can be difficult to talk about and can have significant impacts on a relationship, Psychosexual Therapy (PST) can help to overcome difficulties such as low or loss of Sexual Desire, Vaginismus, Dyspareunia, Premature Ejaculation, Delayed Ejaculation, Erectile Dysfunction and Performance Anxiety.
PST can help overcome these issues and enhance people’s sex lives and for it to become part of a healthy relationship. Sexual issues can arise at anytime in life and can be for a range of reasons. I understand that there can be concerns about what coming to PST will involve,to reassure you, you would never be asked to do anything in the counselling room other than talk, the treatment plans are all individually tailored for the needs of the individual / couple using a range of theories including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to achieve the goals set out by you the client. I work with individuals and couples.
For young people counselling offers a safe environment to talk to a trusted adult who won’t judge them, and who isn’t their parent, as some things are difficult to talk to our parents about. They can discuss, amongst other things, their home life, issues with friends, school or even partners in the knowledge that it is safe to do so. I also work as trainer for Relate Mid-Yorkshire and have delivered training programmes for parents of teens and have a 20 year old daughter, so have a good understanding of the issues faced by young people and the concerns that parents may have to.
If you are a supervisee looking for a supervisor, I currently have availability and would be happy to discuss how we maybe able to work together. Please give me a call or drop me an email for an informal chat.
I have regular supervision, both individually and as part of a group of qualified counsellors, working within the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) guidelines for ongoing professional development. I am a general member of the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT) and a member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).
