Janey Downshire PGDip, PGCertEL, MBACP
Bedale Town Hall
I work with couples, individual parents and young people, in Bedale, North Yorkshire and in Notting Hill, London. Through discussion, listening, teaching and humour the aim is for people to feel positive and encouraged by how they are coping with their issues. I am an experienced counsellor, however my work is more coaching in style. I believe that we all know instinctively what feels right, but what can help is when someone shines a torch on the path ahead.
Having qualified as a counsellor in 2007 (Diploma 2004-2007) I did a further training in Emotional Literacy (2008). Teenagers Translated genesis was a research program, which I developed, involving a group of parents of teenagers. It developed into a highly popular series of Courses to Parents, staff and children (From Year 6), delivered nationally with my colleague. As a result we have an invaluable understanding of the problems which contemporary families face. In turn we aim to provide knowledge, practical solutions and build resilience.
ABOUT MY ONE-TO-ONE SESSIONS
Having worked as a counsellor in the voluntary sector for 7 years I now offer one-to-one sessions to parents of children OF ALL AGES in order to focus on family life and help couples to better understand and manage their child's behaviour. Whether I am working with parents or children/young people, we will look at ways to better manage life's ups and downs (anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, self-harming behaviours) and instead boost motivation, self-confidence & esteem.
HOW MANY SESSIONS SHOULD YOU PLAN FOR?
I suggest around 4 sessions spread over 6/8 weeks. This allows time to discuss any roadblocks (from lack of motivation/drive, anger/anxiety, through to addiction or self-harming tendencies). We look at why children might behave in certain ways and how changing our reactions can help. My aim is that parents, or young people, feel that they have a wider range of strategies to use in normal day-to-day interactions and challenges.
ONE-TO-ONE with PARENTS
Parents play a vital part in a child's developing personality and ability to be happy and successful. Small changes in how we communicate & manage their ups and downs can have a massive impact on a child's wellbeing and the family atmosphere as a whole.
“With our eldest son becoming a teenager we realised our parenting skills were being tested to the limits. We desperately needed help for the whole family's sanity! My husband and I saw Janey on a one to one basis and we were both blown away with the difference it made in understanding our son better and knowing how best to deal with him. It has improved life at home beyond belief.”
"Janey has recently helped us with some parenting challenges we have been dealing with. She has informative and relevant information about teen development, on which she bases strategies to facilitate positive change in behaviour and attitude. Her Friendly, attentive and empathetic manner enabled us to talk freely and openly. It’s been really helpful to talk through these issues".
ONE-TO-ONE with CHILDREN
“Following our separation, our 13 year old son was struggling with how to deal with anger and frustration at home and at school and it was making him unhappy and making family life a challenge. He saw Janey for 5 sessions over a 2 month period. This was the start of a change in our son which, a year on, has made an immeasurable difference to his happiness and to our life at home. The effect of these one-to-one sessions has changed our life and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.”
“My eldest son had a series of one-to-one sessions with Janey when he was 14. He was finding teenage life difficult, as were we. She succeeded in getting through to him in a way we could never have done. Almost from the very first session he became calmer and over time his self-confidence grew. I feel that the support he received during these sessions did a huge amount to repair his self-esteem. He is a very different and happier boy now.”
“Our son had several one to one sessions with Janey which he found invaluable. He used Janey's advice in difficult situations that he had previously struggled to deal with. The outcome was amazing!”
