How Can I help?

It can be really hard to find someone you can talk to about difficult thoughts and emotions that are bothering you and making life a struggle. It’s not easy to take that first step towards sorting out the problems that are making life difficult. Seeing a Counsellor can be that 'first step'. Talking to a Counsellor is very different to talking to a friend or a relative. A Counsellor won't try to give you advice and won't expect you to listen to their problems! The focus of our session is on helping you to explore thoughts and feelings around what is troubling you at your pace, without judgement.

I have been a counsellor for many years. My clients tell me that I am compassionate, approachable and easy to talk to, and although much of our conversation is serious, you can laugh and cry – all emotions are ok in a counselling session! Our session will feel much like a conversation, with the focus on you and whatever you want to bring to the session.

I have experience of working with clients from all walks of life and with all sorts of issues. People often ask me: ‘How do I know if I need Counselling?’ My answer to that is that everyone can benefit from counselling. It is not only for those who are mentally unwell or struggling, it can be a positive experience for anyone and everyone. Although emphasis is gradually changing, caring for our psychological well-being has been way down Society's ‘to do’ list. We are more likely to accept the need to eat well and exercise to keep us physically fit, than to acknowledge that our mental health needs on-going attention. Sadly, there still seems to be reluctance to embrace the idea that we can improve our resilience and psychological well-being by talking to a professional who can help to ensure that we function at our best. But, as you are reading this on Counselling Directory, hopefully you are open to the idea that our mental health needs to be looked after!

I specialise in counselling/coaching adults on the autistic spectrum - and those who wonder if they might be on the spectrum. We can work together to find ways of managing your thoughts and emotions and develop strategies to manage situations that are difficult.

I also counsel in the workplace, helping employees manage work-related issues such as stress, anxiety, bullying, or perhaps to achieve a more satisfactory work/life balance.

I am an experienced relationship counsellor. I work with couples around specific issues they may have, or more generally, to see if the relationship can be improved, or whether it might be better to end the relationship.

I am skilled in working with parents. It can be difficult to navigate the demands of family alongside work, particularly if a child has behavioural issues, which can place considerable strain on the family. It can be helpful to work on strategies, for parents to receive help to work together to resolve issues.

Whilst counselling sessions are often about exploring thoughts and feelings through talking, we can also engage in other ways of working, through art or writing. Not everyone finds it easy to talk about uncomfortable thoughts and feelings and these activities can help you to engage with emotions. It’s not until we have been able to identify and acknowledge what is troubling us, that we are able to understand it and start to ‘file it away’ so that it doesn’t impact on our daily lives.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am qualified as a Clinical Counsellor to Masters level. This is the highest level of practitioner qualification. I also have a level 3 certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and hold an Open University qualification in Psychology. I am also a qualified NLP practitioner and Hypnotherapist. I am a Supervisor of both trainee and experienced counsellors.

I am an Accredited Registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and work to their Code of Ethics.

I update my knowledge and skills with regular courses as part of my continuing professional development.
I have a wide range of experience of clients’ presenting issues, and have worked with a spectrum of age groups: teenagers to those in their eighties. I have previously worked as a counsellor in GP surgeries where I saw patients with a range of difficulties. I engaged in voluntary work with Age UK and I have experience of working with the deaf using a sign language interpreter. I have worked with Shropshire Autonomy and National Autistic Society Shropshire to counsel and coach people on the autistic spectrum.

My background

I was employed as a Civil Servant for many years and in many roles and I have experience of management, and coaching within that setting. I have worked extensively with the elderly, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. I also have experience as a volunteer for a mental health charity.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
