Hello and welcome to my profile. I offer an initial free 20 minute phone consultation in which we will look at the main issues you are dealing with in your life at the present time and if you feel my approach would suit your current needs, we will then book a face to face appointment. You may be experiencing anxiety, fear or depression or you may be going through a very difficult time in your life and not know how to deal with it. You may have had a bereavement or dealing with a challenging personal issue, such as personal relationships, low self esteem or loneliness. My approach is based on us working together to explore your personal issues and challenges in a confidential and supportive way.
I offer psychotherapy, counselling and supervision and have worked with clients for over twenty years on a wide range of issues such as:
- Loss, bereavement and grief
- Relationship issues
- Low self esteem
- Feelings of anxiety and stress
- Problems with family
- Work issues, stress or discrimination
- Redundancy issues
- Eating disorders
- Identity issues
- Loss of purpose in life.
I offer both long and short term therapy and work with both individuals and couples. My professional and clinical interests include working with bereavement and loss and attachment and trauma.
How can I help?
I believe it is important to understand and work with our underlying issues arising from our families and our experiences and offer a therapeutic space in which you can understand the roots of problematic habits, feelings and relationships. I am committed to fostering an atmosphere in which you feel supported and valued in this and in which you gain insight in order to gain a more satisfying way of being in the world. I offer you the opportunity for you to reflect and make meaning of your issues, examining your thinking, feelings and behaviours and how you respond to situations and events in your life.
I specialise in eating disorders and am also interested in trauma and how that manifests in our lives - whether through external events or psychosomatically through our bodies.
I am qualified as a Transactional Analyst; this is a theory of both personality and a method of psychotherapy for both personal growth and change. One of the major characteristics of TA is it's contractual method, whereby both the client and therapist share equal responsibility for achieving the mutually goals of counselling or psychotherapy. In my practice, I offer an environment of supportive and non judgemental support; this offers you the opportunity of exploring previous patterns of behaviour and for developing new and positive ways of being in the here and now.
What should I expect from our first session?
Following your free phone consultation, your initial session is fifty minutes long and is a chance for you to describe the issues that are troubling or distressing you at this time. I will ask some questions about your personal details, family, work and medical history before we look at your presenting issues. In this session, you also have the opportunity to discuss your expectations about your therapy. Subsequent sessions will also be fifty minutes long, unless you request to have a longer session time which can be arranged.
If you feel I can help you we can arrange an initial session in which to talk about what is happening to you at this time in your life and what your expectations are from our work together as well as seeing how we may work together. After this, you can decide if it would suit you to work with me.
I am also a qualified supervisor and will work with your particular needs - whether as a trainee psychotherapist on your training journey or as a qualified therapist who is seeking supervision for your clinical work. I am passionate about the process of supervision and a contributing author to "The Art of Relational Supervision" edited by Helena Hargaden. I would be very happy to discuss your needs further as you proceed on your journey as a psychotherapist.
Autumn 2017: Relational Supervision Course
Relational Supervision ·
Relational Supervision Course beginning in Brighton, October, 2017. Major transport links are Gatwick airport, Victoria and London Bridge stations to Brighton, and M23, A 23 and A27.
The course consists of 12 days and is based on the ideas and process outlined in ‘The Art of Relational Supervision’ ed. by Helena Hargaden
We will draw on relational concepts of mutuality, reciprocity, the bi directionality of the relational unconscious, theories of ‘the third’, and engagement with plurality of meaning. The course is structured in a way which translates these ideas into the practice of relational supervision.
Major themes of authority, power, client protection, ethical practice, use of the imagination, ruptures and enactments, will be explored through a mixture of didactic teaching, experiential learning, and practical application.
Our underlying philosophical position is that as therapists and supervisors we need to work from the inside out.
Our main philosophical position is that therapists and supervisors work from a focus on the Inside/Out. This requires a recognition that unconscious process is not liner or tangible until it emerges through enactments, dreams, reflections and language.
Our theoretical perspective provides a structured way in which to think about the complex relationality involved in transferential dynamics. The course involves twelve days attendance, three tutorials, an essay, and self reflective journal.
