Profile

I am a fully qualified, experienced and registered art psychotherapist, offering a safe and enabling environment in which you can begin to make sense of and resolve your difficulties. This is achieved through self-reflection and self-discovery using art-making as a means of communication,as well as by talking with the therapist. No art skills are necessary, just a willingness to enter into the process, which is also relaxing in its own right.

I have twenty years of experience as an art psychotherapist, including seventeen years working in the NHS Mental Health Services. I am registered with the Health Professions Council and am a full member of the British Association of Art Therapists (with which I am an approved Private Practitioner and Clinical Supervisor). My practice is in line with HPC Standards and the BAAT Code of Ethics and Principles of Professional Practice.

What is art psychotherapy?
Art psychotherapy (also known as art therapy) is a psychological therapy which enables self-reflection and self-discovery through art-making, facilitated by a qualified and registered art psychotherapist. It is similar to any other form of psychotherapy in that it is a confidential and effective treatment for many kinds of emotional distress. The client is enabled to make sense of and resolve her/his difficulties both through the healing nature of the art-making process, and through discussion with the therapist.

Art psychotherapy can be particularly helpful to people who find it hard to express their thoughts and feelings because they can’t find the words to do so, or who express their distress in unhelpful ways. On the other hand, people who are adept at using words, or those who are not quite sure what is wrong, also find that art psychotherapy reaches the parts that other therapies cannot reach!

Who can art psychotherapy help?
Art psychotherapy is a recognised treatment for many kinds of mental health problems and emotional distress. People suffering from the following difficulties have all been helped by this form of therapy:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Eating problems
  • Self-harm
  • Trauma
  • Abuse
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Psychosomatic symptoms
  • Work-related problems
  • Relationship difficulties

Art Psychotherapy is a State Registered profession, regulated by the Health Professions Council (HPC).

Further Information

Supervision: I am a British Association of Art Therapists Approved Supervisor, providing clinical supervision for practising therapists, counsellors and arts therapists. I also have seven years' experience providing training therapy for trainee art psychotherapists.

AIT Energy Therapy: I am currently training in a new form of therapy, Advanced Integrative Therapy, a treatment for trauma which combines psychodynamic psychotherapy with energy approaches.

AIT is method of placing ones hands on on the chakras of ones own body, enabling processes of psychotherapeutic work such as free association and insight, as well as clearing traumas from the energy system, energy being conceived as  containing spirit, psyche and body.

I am able to offer this therapy at a reduced price while I am training.
