About me

Hello, my name is Jane and I am a graduate of the The Family Institute, University of Glamorgan, holding a BSc Honours Degree in Counselling.

I am a very experienced Person Centred Counsellor.  As a person and Therapist, I am warm, caring, compassionate and down to earth in how I relate and build relationships.  I always strive to work professionally, mindfully and sensitively with each and every person I meet. I am a fully registered member of the British Association of Counselling Practice (BACP) www.bacp.co.uk/. I am also registered with the Care Council for Wales and other professional organisations. I have a full enhanced DBS. I have particular experience with bereavement, attachment, relationships, separation and loss. Depression and Anxiety.

I have worked as a Social Worker in the fostering and adoption field; so have an excellent understanding of child development, neglect, trauma, abuse and family issues.

I am also experienced with Mindfulness and Crystal Therapy. I am passionate about their therapeutic benefits. I have gained much insight to help those who care for others. Also if you are living with your own physical pain or chronic illness.  I am on my own journey of self development. I study holistic practices such as Reiki, Crystals, Yoga and Walking & Therapy in Nature. All can prove helpful to our wellbeing and health.

What is Counselling

Attending a counselling session for the first time can be a big step, even stressful in itself. I appreciate that you might feel anxious or nervous about what might happen, and be expected of you. This is why I hold an initial consultation with no obligation to continue. Choosing your counsellor has to feel completely right and suitable for you and setting up a framework of working together that will fit for you.

I will offer you a confidential, safe and secure space in which to explore, gain insights, to help you manage and accept your feelings, such as, anxiety, loneliness, confusion, anger, grief, loss or depression. Your time with me - I will listen; so you can explore any difficulties you may be facing. You will hopefully feel like you’re not alone, so feeling less overwhelmed and more able to empower yourself to make some new choices or changes that are led by you,  supported by me.

About Me

Firstly I am a warm, caring and down to earth person who thoroughly enjoys working with people of all ages. I have done this in many different capacities, working with young children, teenagers, through to older people. I originally came to Counselling in 2002, where I wanted to consolidate all my work experience. I first gained the Intermediate Certificate in Counselling Skills and Studies, then I continued to gain further professional qualifications in Social Work and Counselling, such as the Diploma in Counselling Studies, and Diploma in Counselling. Then achieving a BSc Honours Degree in Counselling. When we meet I can explain my background and experience, qualifications, etc and I can answer any of your questions, the best I can.

I have been a Volunteer Counsellor working therapeutically with Primary Aged children in Cardiff.  Also teenagers aged 16 upwards in college settings.  Also I worked in busy GP Surgeries as a Counsellor supporting clients of different ages with many different needs.  I have supported clients from different ethnic and faith groups. Also many clients from the LGBTQ community. I have also worked in my own Private Practice, working with adults, young people, children and couples, straight from qualifying and have many, many hours of supporting clients.

I also possess over 25 years + of experience in the field of social work and support work; working with individuals and families, of all ages and abilities, within the voluntary, private and statutory sectors of Health, Education and Social Care.   Furthermore I have worked in private industry and fully appreciate the inherent stresses involved; such as work load, work place bullying, issues with confidence, imposter syndrome and redundancy.

My overriding aim is to support my clients with warmth, genuineness and to respect, value and promote your rights and dignity. We can explore and find ways together to review and improve your wellbeing.

How I work

My approach stems from who I am as a person.  I am a Person Centred counsellor and I hope your experience will be one where you can feel safe, non-judged, listened too, supported and understood.   I integrate where appropriate for you, with different psychological therapies.

Working together as equals, the therapeutic relationship that we would create together, will enable you to feel more positive about yourself, with time to find your own solutions, and improve how you feel about your life. Whilst I will support and encourage you to consider new ways of thinking. I am not the expert on you, you are.  Counselling really can be an empowering and transforming experience, increasing your confidence, self awareness, and leaving you more in control of making positive changes in your life; because you have been heard.

I have a vast amount of experience working with both adults and children on an open-ended basis. Our work together may be short term with an agreed time period. Or longer term, we can discuss the session plan together and look to review how the process is progressing for you. With empathy and insight I will offer you an attitude that is safe, sensitive and compassionate.   Each session will last up to an hour; what you wish to discuss and share is entirely up to you; but I will encourage and support you throughout our work together.

I work creatively with many, so if it helps you, or you are interested, your session can be creative.  We can explore the use of art, stones, mindfulness, as a way for you to share and tell your story.  Also walking, being out in nature therapy, locally. I aim to be led by you, and your needs; and can offer suggestions or signposting, where appropriate.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am passionate and committed to continually building and updating my skills and personal development.   I receive regular Supervision.   I am a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (MBACP) and operate to their strict ethical guidelines to ensure safe and contained counselling practice.    http://www.bacp.coM

I am a fully qualified Social Worker and Counsellor, having studied at UWIC (now Cardiff Metropolitan) and The University of Glamorgan, The Family Institute.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Additional information

Your sessions are up to an hour. I can offer an initial free, 15 minutes online zoom discussion.

Shorter sessions can be negotiated together if online / Zoom session. Or a longer session, we can discuss this. Everyone has different needs and preferences for session duration and frequency. Some client work is weekly, fortnightly, monthly or more adhoc.

A client will complete a confidential working agreement, this is usual.

Payment for session is respectfully requested prior to your session start - online payment if working online. I will provide you with my payment information to support this. This is especially so when I am paying for room rental upfront.

Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice - I respectfully ask that you pay up to 50% of your fee please.  I do really appreciate events, emergencies and illness arise for us all. I always try to be understanding of this.  You can pay cancellations online or in person.   If I have to cancel I will do my best to provide as much notice as possible and to offer you a suitable and timely new appointment.
