About me

Struggling to cope with our feelings, life experiences and relationships is fairly common but, sadly, not talked about enough. Many of us will be affected by considerable difficulties managing these at different stages of our lives.  Sometimes events that happen to us can overwhelm our resources for coping.  Coming to therapy can be an important first step in acknowledging and working towards addressing your needs.

The Room Between is a clinical psychology service that specialises in working with trauma and relationship issues - both with individuals and couples.

We work with a variety of relationship issues including fertility, compulsive sexual behaviours (commonly known as "sex addiction"), adjusting to parenthood, divorce and separation, lack of desire, the impact of abuse, the impact of neurodiversity, the aftermath of an affair and conflict.

Relationships affect us from the cradle to the grave and can significantly shape how we value ourselves and how able we feel to trust others and to be vulnerable.  Perhaps you protect yourself within relationships by keeping people at a distance, not allowing yourself to know or voice your needs.  Perhaps you have been betrayed sexually or sexually betrayed your partner and there is a lack of trust and emotional safety.  Sometimes in relationships we are looking for something that nurtures and develops us but can find ourselves repeating patterns that are painful and destructive.

Sometimes our relationships can be traumatic.  One of the core experiences of trauma is powerlessness and the absence of protection.  This can increase anxiety and hypervigilance for anything, or anyone, who might further take control away.  Some symptoms of trauma can include reduced tolerance, feeling low or depressed, anger, anxiety and isolating yourself from others.  Sometimes we might try and cope with our trauma by different means in order to try and distance ourselves from our feelings and others.  This might include escaping into our phones, work and exercise or sex, and over or under eating and drinking.  How we cope will be unique to our own individual circumstances and contexts.  Traumatic experiences can impact our relationships both at home and at work.  Sometimes we can repeat patterns of relationships that might be familiar but can also be damaging.

Traumatic experiences that we specialise in include childhood abuse, relationship traumas, the impact of compulsive sexual behaviours, bereavement, disability, fertility issues, neurodiversity and the loss of a child.  We work holistically and explicitly seek to acknowledge how the different parts of our lives can intersect including race, culture, ability, resources, sex, sexuality, and gender

We work with individuals and couples to develop a courageous space where together we can develop awareness, and compassion for your feelings and needs.  We are sex positive and we employ a sexuality, relationship and gender diversity affirmative approach.

Therapy at The Room Between is offered online.  Dr. Jane Major works with individuals and couples and Dr. Elizabeth Haycock works with individuals.  Should you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact us at  info@theroombetween.com .

I am the founder and director of The Room Between a specialist online trauma and relationship therapy service.  We offer online therapy sessions via Zoom which is similar to Skype, and as easy to use, but more secure.

In my team I work with Liz Haycock who is a self-employed clinical psychologist with specialist training in working with relationship issues and trauma.  She is experienced in working with people who may be affected by low mood, anxiety, and low self worth.  She works with people who wants to change relationship patterns including how they relate to themselves, their experiences and others.  She works integratively and tends to draw upon cognitive analytic psychotherapy.  Liz has immediate availability to see individual adults for therapy.  Please see our website for more details: theroombetween.com and please contact admin@theroombetween.com for more details or to arrange an initial call.
