Profile

I am a qualified and experienced counsellor who can offer you a caring and supportive place to talk about where you are in your life and your hopes for the future. I will help you explore how you approach life and other people. We can talk about strategies you can use to change the way you see yourself, others and the challenges life brings.

By the end of counselling I would hope that you would be in a stronger position to cope with the present and look forward to achieving a more fulfilling life in the future.

How does the counselling relationship work?

My work involves working together to increase the three selfs:

  • Self Awareness
  • Self Acceptance
  • Self Belief

Self Awareness

This means becoming aware of thoughts and feelings as they occur. It involves identifying unhelpful patterns of behaviour. With this insight you can choose to change your behaviour and your way of relating to other people. This is the foundation on which you can view your life more objectively and start to build a more satisfying future.

Self Acceptance

I believe that self acceptance lies at the core of successful counselling. It involves the crucial ability of learning how to be kind to yourself. If you continually critisise yourself for not being the person you would like to be you will find it much harder to become that person. The process of developing a more positive attitude towards yourself and acknowledging your own worth is not easy. You may have internalised negative views of yourself which are so entrenched you see them as facts. However, they are opinions not facts and can be challenged. Within a non-judgemental environment I will help you challenge these negative opinions you have of yourself.

Self Belief

This is about building resilience to withstand the difficulties that life brings. It is also about creating the inner strength and resources needed to create the fulfilling life you want and accepting setbacks and trying again. Having a healthy, realistic self belief will help you discover what's important to you and move in the direction of achieving your potential. It will enable you to achieve your goals by being assertive rather than veering between the two extremes of aggression and passivity. Self belief will mean you taking responsibility for yourself and not relying on the approval from others or expecting them to change to suit your wants and needs.

Therapies Offered

Fees

I offer a free 30 minute introductory session where I explain my practice and you talk about why you need counselling and we look at if we're happy working together. After that I charge £37 for a 55 minute session.

Further Information

I have an interest in how the pressure to conform in society affects minority groups. This may be visible or invisible to the individual. I have counselled many gay men and lesbians of different ethnic and racial backgrounds and have observed the effect that living in a heterocenric world has on self acceptance.

I counsel from a safe and welcoming therapy centre close to Shrewsbury town centre with ample free parking. The therapy is wheelchair accessible.
