Jane Barker MBACP (ACCRD) Registered Counsellor
My name is Jane Barker and I am a BACP accredited therapeutic counsellor based in York working from the city centre. Your decision to see a counsellor may feel daunting so I hope I can offer you a safe, trusting and confidential setting where we can initially discuss your needs and expectations.
I have been working as a counsellor for 10 years and besides my private practice I currently work in a wellbeing at work organisation and worked for many years in education and voluntarty settings. I have experience of working with adults and adolescents with issues such as anxiety and panic, family and relationship problems, low mood, anger, loss, bereavement of both humans and pets and low self esteem.
Sometimes we need to talk, but more importantly we need someone to listen properly and without judgement. You may be finding life hard at the moment or have the desire to discuss problems which are getting in the way of your happiness. This is where counselling can help, by allowing you to not only speak about what you are going through, but to also process and make sense of it.
Reasearch shows that in order for a clients condition to improve the therapeutic relaionship between the counsellor and client is of key importance. This being a warm genuine caring relationship allowing the client to express there feelings honestly and freely without fear of judgement. Through this process the client can start to see themself as a person with the power to make any changes they may wish to make.
Through counselling the aim is to help you to work through your difficulties, make changes and in turn make life more manageable and fulfilling.
I offer short and long term counselling which can be discussed after the initial session. Sessions last for 1 hour and I practise from Friargate in the centre of York which is within easy walking distance of the railway station.
I offer daytime appointments and some evening and weekend appointments.
