Hi, thank you for taking the time to read my profile! Firstly, I would like you to know that the reason I have chosen counselling as a profession is because I am passionate about helping people to help themselves, to make the best of their time by living a more fulfilled and meaningful life.
I am a bilingual Portuguese and English fully qualified professional Humanistic Counsellor, with a level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Practice and director of a counselling services company called ESPERANSA, which means HOPE in Portuguese; as I come from Brazil originally.
I have developed my counselling model based on Person-Centred relational style, using Gestalt, EFT (Emotion-Focused therapy) and existential therapy for further exploration of my clients needs. I offer a confidential, non-judgmental, safe and supportive environment, providing a professional counselling service for adults and young people. Also, I facilitate Personal Development / Group Therapy within different settings including Welsh Government Communities Schemes.
In reality, I am a truly person-centred counsellor who believes people are self-healers and my job is to provide an efficacious therapeutic work, in which my clients may channel their own inner resources to self-healing; therefore enabling them to live a more fulfilled and meaningful life. In this light, I do base my practice within a strong connection between my clients and me but bounded by the framework of the therapeutic relationship. Firstly, I do meet my clients where they are as a human being, not just as a professional counsellor trained in Humanistic approaches. Secondly, I believe 100% in my clients’ inner resources to self-healing and I aim to work together to the best of my abilities to achieve their therapeutic change. However, I work from the principle that my clients must take responsibility upon their own lives, even though we embark on this therapeutic journey together. Thirdly, I believe in myself, in the fact that I am able to emotionally contact my clients, providing a safe, non-judgmental environment and ethical service. I maintain and uphold the values and principles of the BACP, by honoring the trust placed in me and being totally committed to my clients`s well being.
Empirical evidence has shown that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important effective factor in successful therapy outcome. In this light, I believe that in order to successfully work together, you need to feel whether you can work with me and can trust that I can help you to help yourself. As well as, I should advise you if I feel I am not the right person to help you or if I feel counselling is not the right way forward for you.

HOW I WORK
I work extremely well with emotions allowing you to activate and focus on your emotional state and thus helping you to change problematic emotional situations or unwanted self- experiences. In this context, it is vital for you to know the importance of the exploration and expression of your emotions in our sessions, in the moment by moment process. That is, in our therapy sessions we can use your emotions as the path in which will direct us to what is important for you. Also, through this knowledge you can find out what you need to do, find out who you are and hopefully become that person. Unfortunately, sometimes emotional expression is associated with a sign of weakness or even shame, due to many different factors including upbringing and culture. However, I come from a country (Brazil) in which expressing emotions is part of being human! In this light, this reflects positively in my relational style and in my congruent way of being, as I am very much in contact with my own emotions and similarly I feel completely comfortable in embracing my client`s displaying of emotion. Nevertheless, I offer my counselling services in according to your needs and the therapeutic work with emotions takes place in your own time, only when you feel ready to explore and express your emotional state.
Usually, emotions are positive and adaptive and their purpose is to guide us to experience important needs and encourage effective actions. “…emotions are crucial in capturing the wholeness of human functioning in that they are complex, integrative, organismically based reactions to our perception of ourselves and the world.”(Greenberg, Rice, and Elliott., 1997, pg.5). In this context, the Process Experiential Emotion-Focused Therapy/Counselling for Depression is evidence based approach to therapy that meets NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines for the treatment of depression. It has been approved by the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological therapy), “The PE Emotion Focused Therapy was developed as an empirically informed approach to therapy on the treatment for depression” (Elliot et al., 1990; Greenberg, Elliott, & Foerster, 1990 cited in Elliot, Watson, Goldman and Greenberg, 2010, p.289) Additionally, EFT is evidence based research on the treatment of Complex Trauma and I have experienced in working successfully with clients who experienced numerous trauma in their lives. Successful therapy requires helping clients access and explore painful feelings in order to modify maladaptive emotions. Emotion-Focused Therapy for Trauma (EFTT) is the only trauma therapy that is based on an empirically-verified model that identifies steps in the process of resolving past relational issues” (Emotion-focused-Therapy-Complex-Trauma-Integrative/dp/1433807254)
In my Person-centred relational style, I work actively with the ideas of Emotion Focused Therapy and I have adapted a personal explanation of it to my clients, in which follows: " Yourself is your machine which is the vehicle you have to survive; your emotions are the source of information of who you are and of the process in which you experience the things in your life (your survival). When you explore and express your emotions by releasing it, it's like you have changed the battery of your machine, as well as you have changed the oil, having washed your soul. That is, your machine (yourself) is ready to take on again, charged with the knowledge of how you feel and also of what you need, therefore which direction to undertake. However, when you suppress your emotions and make yourself busy with everything else apart from what's going on inside you, your emotions become your demons that eat you alive inside and take your mechanisms (inner resources) away, as most importantly your self-esteem. That is, without self-esteem you are not important to yourself, your wishes, your dreams, your life and the fact you’re suffering are dismissed. In this case, you end up losing yourself down the line and life becomes too hard to bear, without knowing who you are."
Personally, I believe that most of ill mental health issues are sicknesses of the soul, caused by a disconnection within, which stems from somewhere down the person`s life history. In this context, I have found within my practice people that have come to see me are only existing in life rather than living life. Although they have presented different mental health issues and diagnostics, nevertheless usually they feel lost within themselves and have become prisoners of their own mind, which is locked in the past or in the future rather than in the present.
Hence, the core of my therapeutic style is with regards to help my clients to integrate the scarred parts of the self, with the support in the formation of self-esteem, through the learning of self-acceptance and self-authenticity. In this light, I work with the concept that to find self-esteem is to find a connection within ourselves, which we can actually hear and listen actively to our internal voice. That is, by feeling our emotions and expressing them, by connecting to our organismic value and having a contact within our felt sense; similarly by trusting our "gut". Only then can we access strong and authentic contact with others and with life itself, at a present time.
Finally, my therapeutic work involves exploring and expressing your suppressed or dismissed emotions and bring them into life; by helping you becoming aware of, accept and make sense of your emotional experience. This facilitates in the help of letting your emotions “be", letting them (suppressed demons) out of your system and freeing you to live your life to your full potential. In this light, by being true to the core principles of person-centred approach, as Empathy, Congruence and Unconditional Positive Regard, I am willing and not afraid to hold your emotions and be with you in your journey to self-healing.

- I have introduced a coaching approach alongside to my current practice of counselling.
Previously, I worked for 3 years as a voluntary counsellor in charity organizations, in which I experienced in working at long and short term counselling. . Also, I have worked alongside Welsh Government Communities Schemes, providing group therapy for vulnerable people and people with ill mental health.
Presently, having established my own practice I am currently self-employed, providing individual and couples counselling sessions for self-referred clients. In addition, as a service provider included within the list shared with GP’s, through invitation by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, I am proud to support the demand for counselling and psychotherapy services for the patients of its Primary and Community Networks of Swansea and surrounding areas.
I have counselled clients from a wide range of ages, both males and females from different ethnicity and cultures. In particular I have experience of counselling clients through issues such as severe, moderate and mild depression, sexual abuse, domestic abuse, PTSD / complex trauma, childhood trauma, anger management, psychological abuse, bereavement, health issues, self harm, relationship issues, lack of esteem, social phobias, loss and change, negative thoughts, anxiety/panic disorder, stress, eating disorders, sexual orientation, bullying at work, addiction, attachment issues, obsessive compulsive disorder. Also, I have worked well with suicidal clients affecting change in behaviour and thought.

In order to ensure that I am working ethically with my clients and to assist in the development of my therapeutic practice, I attend to supervision sessions once a month for each group and individual work. I am a professional registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work within their ethical framework for good practice.

Please give 24 hours notice if you have to cancel your appointment. Otherwise there will be a charge of £40 for each missed or cancelled session.
I advise you to consider in coming for counselling on a weekly basis at the minimum of six to eight sessions, in order to give enough time for the therapeutic process to unfold. Subsequently, we may review your progress and discuss the way forward, in which may be appropriate to meet your needs.
You have the right to withdraw the counselling at any moment, if you do not wish to continue the therapeutic work. Please ensure that you have some kind of support to assist you, if you decide to do it so.
