About me

I practice in London Harley Street, The Cotswolds and Worldwide, as an experienced counselling professional  and personal development coach. When you enter in to the therapy process  with me, I will offer you a very safe, non judgemental and confidential therapeutic relationship in which you can explore any personal, professional or difficult issues that may be causing you frustration or distress.

Sometimes the thought of contacting a therapist can be very nerve racking; most people are a little anxious and find it difficult to make the first call or send an email, but let me assure you there is no need to be anxious, you will receive a very warm and caring response from me.

TESTIMONIAL
For many years I have suffered with negative thought patterns together with crippling Health Anxiety. Despite visiting therapists for help I have not succeeded in changing the way I have felt about these issues - until now! Jan has provided me with  positive coping strategies to challenge the way I feel and think about my problems. Jan has a kind, caring and professional manner. From our very first meeting I felt completely understood and was made to feel comfortable and at ease. I am so grateful for the help and support that she has afforded me and would not hesitate to recommend her if appropriate. July 2013 (name supplied).

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a generic therapist, which means I work with individuals covering many different issues. Common areas include:

  • Depression/low mood, anxiety, relationship breakdown, low self-esteem, despondency, difficulty forming relationships, eating disorder  and addiction and many more.

I completed my professional training nearly  26 years ago. Then continued to go on to further study for two years and also qualified as a therapist with Relate, the renowned counselling organisation for couples. I have been working with couples in my own private practice now for 25years, covering many topic areas to include:

  • Infidelity, sexual issues, anger, resentment, trust issues, poor communication, step-parenting and being unsure whether to end a relationship or not.

Over the years I have extended my knowledge and gained qualifications in many areas; working with domestic violence and mental health issues, trauma, PTSD, working with survivors of abuse and in the field of addiction. I also have an interest in working with clients with asperger syndrome, with much success (see testimonials below).

I also working with select organisation providing high quality employee support.

I am registered and accredited with: BACP, CSTD and also an associate member of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Testimonials

‘I am an adult with (recently diagnosed) Aspergers, and secondary mental health problems. Having spent a long time searching for someone in the Cheltenham area with knowledge and training to be able to help with learning how best to deal with Asperger’s and its consequences, I can happily and confidently say that Jan is indeed that right person who knows the way to help with specific Asperger’s oriented needs. She has helped me a lot, and has a great sense of humour too!   David Pearce ( musician)

Couple Testimonial 2014 (Aspergers)

“We started seeing Jan around a year ago after my husband was diagnosed with Aspergers.  The last year has been a revelation.  Jan has helped both of us to learn more about the condition and we have been able to apply this successfully to understand each other better and drastically improve family life.  There was no support from the NHS after the diagnosis (not even a leaflet!) and I’m so glad we did some research of our own to find Jan.  She has armed us with useful strategies relevant to our individual circumstances to help family life run smoothly again.  I can’t recommend her highly enough”

TESTIMONIALS'

I
was almost a prisoner in my own body. Plagued by my obsessive compulsive thoughts and constant fears; I was not wanting to go on any longer. I had been in counselling before but it had not stopped me carrying out my daily rituals and sometimes I would have to return to my house to check everything was in order again and again. It ruined my marriage and my self esteem was on the floor. Jan helped me in a way that transformed my life. I was able to tell her the absolute truth about my obsessive habits and thoughts. She put me at ease, never judged or made me feel in the least bit awkward no matter what I told her.She helped me train my thinking and encouraged me to believe I could make changes. It has changed my life. Mrs B................................

Thank you for your support and professionalism during my recent counselling meetings. There were a number of things that just needed to be talked through, and exploring them with you has helped me understand a lot more about my childhood and how the family dynamic has affected my later life. I hope this knowledge and your advice about coping strategies will help with any future experiences of anxiety I may have (though, of course I hope there aren't any!).

Many thanks again for your help and understanding.
