Profile
I am a qualified and experienced counsellor offering a confidential and professional service to individuals and couples of all ages. My work with people can be either short or long term depending on what best suits a persons individual need. Within my private practice I provide both counselling and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).
I regularly work with individuals who are experiencing issues relating to depression, health, low self-esteem, work related stress, anxiety, abuse, anger, trauma, sexuality, bereavement and loss. I also work with individuals or couples who are experiencing relationship difficulties perhaps as a result of any the issues mentioned above.
Many of us can benefit from the understanding and support of a skilled and reliable person at challenging times in our lives. This support can help us make sense of some of our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. I believe the overall aim of counselling is to provide people with space to talk and reflect on issues in their life that feel important, and also ones that are possibly causing distress. I see my role as a counsellor as building trusting and productive working relationships with people and providing a safe environment where they can gain further awareness, alongside exploring ways in which they can better cope or manage. I respect peoples' values, culture, existing skills and autonomy and I believe that we are all capable of making positive changes when we are ready and able.

My private office is located close to Stafford town centre. There are numerous free parking spaces nearby and the building where my office is based has full disabled access and toilet facilities. I am located just a couple of minutes walk from a bus stop (Greyfriars) which is on the main route for buses arriving from the north and south of Stafford as well as Newcastle under Lyme and Stoke on Trent. I offer a variety of appointment times including daytime, evening and Saturday morning appointments at my Stafford office. I do provide home visits in certain cases where there may be a difficulty in travelling, although this option would need to be discussed beforehand.
I also work as an associate counsellor for the Birmingham Centre for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which is based in Harborne, Birmingham. At this venue I offer appointments mainly on Friday mornings although I have some flexiblility and may be able to arrange alternative appointment times if you let me know what would best suit you.
I appreciate how difficult it can be for some people to make that first step to seek professional help. Why not call or email me so that you can decide for yourself whether you would like us to work together?
Training, Qualifications & Experience
I am a fully accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I also hold provisional accreditation with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).
My core training was as a humanistic counsellor although I have also trained and qualified as a cognitive behavioural therapist. I prefer to use what is described as an integrative approach (combining various concepts in thinking and approaches in therapy) and by using my assessment skills and experience I provide therapy which is evidence-based. I appreciate that each person is an individual and I understand that it is important to be flexible and tailor therapy to meet a persons unique needs.
I began my counselling skills training in 1998 and progressively moved into higher education graduating from both Keele and Staffordshire Universities. Higher Qualifications that I have gained include;
- Master of Science (MSc.) in Counselling Psychology
- Post Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling Supervision
- Graduate Diploma in Counselling
- Certificate in Counselling
My experience of enabling and supporting people through growth or recovery has been acquired by working for many years within the NHS, voluntary sector and privately. I am currently employed within a children's hospice and have extensive experience working with individuals and families within palliative care. I also have experience of working therapeutically with children and adolescents in primary and secondary school settings utilising creative and play therapies. I welcome referrals from all ages from children through to senior citizens.
As an accredited practitioner I am committed to further developing my skills and abilities by attending and participating in professional development training courses and events throughout the year.
Thank you for reading my page and whatever you decide to do I wish you well, Jamie.
