About me

Have you ever felt not quite yourself, but didn’t know why?
Are you able to stand outside yourself and see what might be wrong?

Psychotherapy can act as a mirror and allow you to look at what is bothering you.

Sometimes we know what is causing our distress. It could be bereavement, career concerns, relationship issues or physical illness. The process of talking to a therapist about these problems allows you to shed some light on them in a confidential, safe way, with someone who is in no other way connected to your life.

The journey from not feeling yourself to discovering yourself is different for every single one of us. I believe psychotherapy has two main functions: It can provide the support needed to move through crisis; It allows you time and space to get to know yourself, allowing you to develop a greater sense of well being.

I offer long and short-term counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples with a wide range of difficulties including;

Relationship issues
Self-esteem issues
Sex and sexuality issues
Gay, lesbian and bisexual issues
Eating disorders
Couples Counselling

And don't forget, sometimes we don’t know the exact nature of what’s wrong, but we know it doesn’t have to be that way.

Training, qualifications & experience

About James L Smith

I trained in Transpersonal Psychotherapy at the Centre for Counselling & Psychotherapy Education. I subscribe to the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Code of Ethics.

As a therapist I work in many different ways. While it’s true the majority of counselling and psychotherapy is talking, I also work with drawings, guided meditations and dreams. Whatever the method, my role is that of an interested companion on your journey – I’m there to point out things that you may not have noticed.

I also speak fluent Portuguese.

Further information

How many sessions will I need?
This varies immensely from person to person. For some specific issues or goals, 8-12 weeks may be suitable. As a tool for personal development, therapy can be open ended. In our first session, we can discuss what is right for you.

What happens in the first session?
We will talk about why you have decided to come to therapy, what you wish to achieve and any goals you may have in mind. I will also ask some questions about your current situation and background. This session will be a chance for us both to decide if we want to continue and discuss how we will work going forward.

Do I need to prepare anything for the first session?
No. Just bring yourself.
