About me

I am a fully qualified counsellor and relationship therapist specialising in couples counselling, family counselling and individual psychotherapy. My practice gives you a safe and discreet place where you can talk openly and freely about any issues that may be troubling you.

You may be concerned about relationship issues, family problems, work-related stress, a recent or past trauma, depression or anxiety. Maybe you feel you aren’t getting the most out of life and would really benefit from talking to someone.

Whatever is causing you concern, together, we can make sense of your life experiences, understand what would make a difference and work towards reaching your goals.

Couples counselling/relationship counselling

I trained with Relate and still work with them in Colchester on a Monday, alongside my private practice. I am passionate about the work we do to help couples and individuals have the kind of relationships they long for.

Some of the relationship problems I have worked with include communication issues, jealousy and insecurity, affairs and betrayals, family issues, parenting and step-parenting concerns, separation and divorce, bereavement and life stages.

Therapeutic approach

Rather than working from just one therapeutic approach, I bring together the knowledge and techniques I have gained from my years of training & experience. I draw on what is most useful to the individual, couple or family I am talking with and what meets their needs or personal preferences.

We might focus on your childhood and how that has influenced your life decisions or instead reflect on what is affecting your life right now. It could be that incorporating mindfulness techniques or cognitive-behavioural strategies would be useful for you. We might also use psychoeducation or neuroscience to inform our sessions.

However we choose to proceed, we will work collaboratively and make therapeutic decisions together.

Our first meeting

When we first meet, whether face to face or online, I like to spend time getting to know you and your current life situation. We will also explore what you hope to get out of therapy.

And of course, this session is also a chance for you to find out if I am the right therapist for you. I offer this first session at a reduced rate of £35 with no obligation to continue.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Masters in Relationship Therapy and am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.

For many years now, I have also worked as a counsellor in the voluntary sector and I am always humbled by the courage and resilience shown by the individuals I meet, despite the difficulties they face.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in public relations and the charity sector, helping individuals and businesses to communicate. Interestingly, it was always the simplest solutions that were the most effective - and usually they sprang from careful listening and creating a message that was truly heartfelt.

I have taught psychology to young people and adults in further education and have maintained my interest in developing training and coaching programmes for more productive learning - and living.

Relationship coaching

Relationship coaching is a specially developed series of six sessions for anyone who would like to start a new relationship.

You may be someone who is starting to think about dating again or perhaps you would like to understand why your last relationship didn't work out.

Together, we work through a different relationship area each week using a mix of counselling and coaching techniques. Using ideas and strategies from psychodynamic, CBT and family systems theories we look at your relationship history and what influences, past and present, have affected how you behave in a relationship.

The aim of these sessions is to help you find the relationship that works best for you.

Where and When I work

I offer counselling in:

Colchester: Monday and Thursday

Chelmsford: Tuesday and Wednesday.

I also work with Relate in Colchester on a Monday, offering couples counselling and family counselling.

If you are finding it difficult to meet with me in person, I also offer online counselling. Many of my clients find this medium very effective, although it seems to work best if we have at least one face to face session.
