About me

Hello and welcome to my page on the counselling directory.  I imagine you must be having a tough time right now so I'm so glad you're reaching out for some help. I offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help people learn how to handle their difficult thoughts & feelings more effectively and to take actions that help them lead the sort of life they want to lead, behaving like the sort of person they want to be.

You can think of me as your guide up the mountain, always alongside you, showing you footholds you may  missed or pointing out perhaps that you're taking a path that in the past hasn't helped you to get where you want to go.

I specialise in anxiety disorders such as social anxiety, panic disorder and generalised anxiety (the 'What if' syndrome) and am also experienced in working with clients with depression, grief, eating issues, low self esteem and relationship difficulties.

I work with children and teens as well as adults. I was a High School teacher for 10 years before retraining to be a therapist so have a particular interest in working with teenagers. It's tough being a teen or child in 2022 so I aim to work to help your child or teen learn some useful skills they can use both now and in the future.

I'm a friendly, warm, down to earth therapist who really enjoys working with people who feel stuck. My job is to acknowledge the stuckness and to help you find a way out.

I have experience delivering CBT within the NHS as well as in private practice.

At our initial session we'll make sure that together we understand a bit more clearly what's going on and how you might be able to get out of your current difficulties and achieve the healing you are looking for.

There are many reasons why you might be considering CBT at the moment. For lots of people, going to seek help is in itself a big step. My role is to offer you a safe space in which you can feel listened to, supported and helped in moving forward in your life. Perhaps you are struggling at the moment with anxiety or depression, feeling overwhelmed and with nowhere to turn. Or perhaps you have developed some unhealthy coping mechanisms- using food as a source of comfort, numbing out on alcohol, watching hours of mindless TV.

Whatever is bothering you, I am here to help. Together we will explore what is going on for you, what is causing you difficulties in your life. By creating a safe space together, I will enable you to talk about your deepest thoughts and feelings, and to help you learn some practical skills you can use right now to help you lead a richer and more meaningful life.

Accredited CBT psychotherapist here to help you now.

What I will offer you is the experience of really being listened to, of being understood and of being truly valued as a human being. You matter. Your life matters and together we can work towards you becoming the you that is more content, more fulfilled and more in charge of his or her own life.

Training, qualifications & experience

Post Graduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Post Graduate Diploma in Humanistic Therapeutic Counselling

Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling Teenagers

Post Graduate Cert in Special Needs (Behavioural problems)

Post Graduate Cert in Education (English)

BA (Hons)

Originally trained as a teacher of students with Special Needs I went on to study as a counsellor and then undertook further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and am now offering counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy  to both adults and young people. I worked at the NHS part time as a CBT therapist specialising in anxiety and depression.

Additionally I have experience of working with the national bereavement organisation Cruse and have been able to support clients as they journey through the process of grief. Grief affects us all differently but sometimes having a non-judgemental listening ear can help us get through the dark days ahead.

Some of the most common presenting issues that I see tend to cluster around the areas of anxiety and depression. These ways of being can have an enormous impact on people's lives and counselling can help people to understand more about their experience and to tap into their own ability to self-heal. My role is to stand alongside you and support you through your experiences so that you can move towards a fuller, more satisfying life.

Counselling teenagers or providing them with CBT can help them to make real changes in their life, helping them to understand some ways of thinking and behaving that might be unhelpful.  I select which method I use according to the needs of the child or teenager with whom I am working. I am skilled at facilitating therapeutic relationships and my experience both as a teacher and as a mother, enable me to understand the developmental needs of young people. I have an enhanced DBS certificate which means I have no criminal convictions and can work safely with young people. Additionally I have safeguarding training in working with young people.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
