About me

Individual Counselling & Couples Therapy  - COSRT  Member                                                              'The Professional Body for Relationship & Sex Therapists’

I’m a Psychotherapist, Couples Therapist & member of the College of Sexual & Relationship Therapists. I cover an array of psychological problems but specialise in working through all aspects of relationship difficulties including sexual. These may be related to depression, anxiety or a feeling of alone-ness and could driven by psychological or intimacy based issues. You can attend individually or in a couple. Individual counselling is only offered on a weekly basis: in other words you would be committing to meeting weekly.Couples Therapy on the other hand is either weekly or bi-weekly. Finally psychosexual is a combination of weekly and two weekly treatment. For all, therapy can help to reconnect you to yourself and others. I work both on Zoom and face to face in Cardiff & Chepstow. Fees are £80 for individuals and £90 for couples.

All my therapy is an invitation to commit to a more meaningful future; it aims to get you to a place, less constrained  by childhood difficulties, traumas, shame, particularly sexually informed shame or one-thousand-and-one other ways of feeling depressed, anxious or suicidal.

As a couples therapist & Tavistock psychosexual therapist I am trained in a broad base of presentations ranging from explicit sexual problems to those of simple disconnection to betrayal. We all sit within the context of relationships past and present and are of course products of our own history. It is understanding how our early experiences constelate & inform us, that offers a way to a creative and more authentic way of living; a way of thinking and being connected. Perhaps even a way to recalibrate and reconfigure relationships and what they mean to you. Separating here and now experiences from dysfunctional history is where you and I sharing therapy stories will begin that process. As a seasoned therapist with Tavistock London training my fees are £80 for individuals and £90 for couples for 50 minute sessions and £100 for 75 minute sessions for both individuals and couples.

For couples working through the complexity of maintaining intimacy or perhaps a loss of emotional connection, sexual betrayal or simply feeling distant from the other - all can be easier with professional input. Therapy aims at regaining a 'couple state mind' that comes so easily at the start of most relationships, the ability of putting the needs of the relationship first rather than the individual’s. Paradoxically for some, therapy can help in how to compassionately separate, without attrition or the use of aggressive lawyers.

In regard to complex matters of psycho sexual intimacy, I complete Tavistock Institute training in January 2023 and am a current member of The College of Sexual & Relationship Therapists. I offer clinics in that specialist field of sex therapy in the NHS and in private practice both in Cardiff and Chepstow.

While as stated earlier I offer sessions on a weekly basis for individuals and either weekly or fortnightly for couples but I do have flexibility with the times and days when we can meet: on occasion you may need to wait a few weeks before a space becomes available. My session fees reflect both the depth of my experience and the specialist training that the College of Relationship & Sexual Therapists require to work in the complex field of relationships & sexual dysfunction.

For individuals, we will explore together your ‘relational blueprint’ and seek to make changes to the way you perform relationship that may be the causes of depression, anxiety or perhaps a profound sense of alone-ness.

For many social media, digital stuff and 'screen life' dominates the cultural moment we exist in and with it comes expectations, particularly in relationships, that are often unrealistic or unrealisable. A sense of failure, of not being good enough, of not achieving what we imagine others have, is often accompanied by anxiety, depression and a fragility of mental health. We somehow imagine that like 'Amazon Prime', we should be able to hit the ‘buy’ button in our life or relationships & have everything we want delivered by 8am the following morning. That is rarely possible.

What to do?

Well, we remain powerful whatever our history, even if perhaps a little lost at times. Therapy can shift stuckness.

With individuals I work on a weekly basis, as that has proven to be the most effective psychologically and paradoxically the most cost effective! If you were to complete a full year, allowing for holidays that would work out at about 40 sessions. And you can of course end at any time you choose. You are in charge of how much or how little therapy you wish to engage in.

Couples work is open to either weekly or a two weekly pattern of meeting. Your commitment to this process is important and while in therapy you are expected to attend regularly ( school holidays excluded) Follow up from time-to-time maintenance checks are available too. In all cases you can of course stop at any time.

So what could therapy do for you?

Perhaps therapy can provide you with the tools to make your life and your relationships take the shape that you wish them to. Perhaps it could empower you to leave the swamp of depression, in order to clear the space for a sweeter experience. A chance to finally settle unhelpful anxiety. Or to find in couples counselling the strength to leave a failing relationship or work through complex issues, such as betrayal, in order to rebuild again, trust and love. If I have made it sound a little too easy - let me just say it isn't straightforward. Courage and commitment are just two essential ingredients to achieving what you seek.

Counselling does however, provide the space to explore why we can at times struggle. Why we can feel unsure or unable to stop repeated patterns of destructive behaviour in ourselves or others. Or why we can at times just feel so very low, anxious and depressed.

Therapy can help restore your resilience, robustness and self-belief: all this in order to facilitate the quality of relationship & loving connections that you may have lost and may be desperate to find again. Or perhaps you have simply longed to allow yourself to feel loved and to be able to safely offer love again; to allow love and lust to co-exist thrive in unison.

As an existential therapist, the way we experience each other is crucial to the progress of the therapy, and I invite all my new clients to book just one session with me, before making any further commitment. And at the end of that, you can decide whether it feels that I could offer the kind of relationship which might allow for the healing and restorative work to begin.

I have over twenty-thousand hours of client experience.

While many counsellors will ask you to see them in their homes, which can be uncomfortable to say the least, as a counsellor/psychotherapist I see clients in two discrete, exceptionally bright and comfortable practices - one right in the heart of Cardiff & the other between Usk and Chepstow.

Both have car parking either directly outside(Chepstow)or in nearby side streets (Cardiff), waiting rooms and toilet facilities for comfort breaks - all to help take as much of the stress and anxiety out of situation as possible.

An entirely 'open' contract means that you are in control of how long you wish to stay in therapy and can stop the counselling process at any time that you feel is best - without any prior notice.

Please drop me an email if you would like to ask me anything not covered here.

Best Jack

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Take the first step

I am aware from my own experiences of being a client, that taking that first step into counselling can be frightening.

Facing up to long time problems which may at some level feel impossible to deal often takes either a blind leap of faith or just plain desperation. So if you do make it through the door, please remember that any therapist in private practice works for you. As such I operate an open contract which means that you are not committed to having to come to therapy for any set length of time but rather are free to determine as and when you feel you would like to stop. In other words if at any point you feel it is not working just drop me an email or text to let me know you no longer wish to attend. My experience is the opposite but I think it's important for you to know that you are the one in the power.

And while I hope to bring a degree of experience and theoretical knowledge to the meeting, I am not an expert on your life - you are. It is that collaborative meeting of our different histories, however, that can be so useful and healing. No matter how great the problem feels for you now working side by side I aim to facilitate you to achieve the goals and changes that you need to create a greater sense of meaning in everyday life and key relationships.
