My name is Ishpal and welcome to my profile. I am a Counselling Psychologist currently based in Weybridge. I work holistically and for me the most fundamental aspect of therapy is the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist; and there is a large body of evidence which suggests that it is the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in successful therapy. I believe the therapeutic relationship is based on openness, trust and honesty, and is the foundation for growth and change.
How I work
I offer psychological therapy for individuals and couples and I work using an integrative approach, drawing on a number of theories, including: humanistic, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural (Compassion Focused Therapy in particular), and psychosexual therapy. I have training and experience working with numerous therapeutic approaches and this enables me to work flexibly and adapt to meet the needs of my clients. I offer therapy for personal development, for people to gain greater insight into themselves and their relationships, and for a range of emotional and behavioural difficulties.
In addition to working privately, I work within the NHS in a GUM and HIV service; I have several years of experience working with people with long term health conditions, including HIV, herpes, and other STIs. I also work in an NHS Psychosexual therapy service where I offer therapy to individuals and couples who experience sexual problems and relationship issues. My portfolio of experience is varied; I have worked with adults and young people experiencing depression, anxiety, domestic abuse, health anxiety, low self esteem, relationship difficulties and sexual problems and have many years experience working with LGBTQ clients. I am also an Associate Lecturer at the University of Surrey and deliver various workshops and lecture series’ to doctoral students.
I am registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and am a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society and I am committed to high ethical standards of practice and professional development.
Thinking about starting therapy can be anxiety provoking and you may have many questions about what therapy involves. I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation as an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about me or the way I work. After this, if you would like to make an appointment to meet with me to have an initial face to face consultation, we can find a date and time that suits us both. If I do not answer your call or respond to your email immediately, please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
If you decide to meet with me for an initial consultation, I will use the opportunity to learn more about you, your needs, current difficulties, and hopes for therapy. This is also an opportunity for you see how I work and reflect on how comfortable you feel working with me. Toward the end of this initial consultation we will think together about a way forward.
