Counselling might have different meanings for each person. There is no single or 'right' way to approach it. I see it as a special kind of supporting working relationship, a consistent partnership based on trust and respect, which can develop according to a person's individual feelings, experiences and needs. We may not know what to expect, and that can be a positive thing. A big part of the work is in trying it for yourself. My approach is to see what happens and find out how we might work together.
I work in a down-to-earth way, and at a pace that feels right for my client. The first step is to provide a safe and confidential space where you can begin to express and explore what is on your mind - what you are feeling. These may be things that you have not felt able to talk about with the people closest to you.
My own experience of counselling has gradually helped me to understand myself better and to feel more at home in my own skin and in the world. What you might gain from counselling will be personal to you, and only yours to discover. It may be the start of a lifelong development of your own self-awareness. It may help you to reach a point where you feel more able to make informed choices for your own wellbeing. My role is to accompany you and support you in this, with empathy and an open mind.
Training, qualifications & experience
I initially trained to be a counsellor for four years and obtained a professional diploma in therapeutic counselling (CPCAB: Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body). This training integrated a number of therapeutic ways of working (for example: person-centred which begins with positive regard and acknowledges the client's own sense of themselves, and psychodynamic which explores behaviour patterns and perspectives that can have roots in a person's life history).
I have since worked for two years with Southside Family Project in Bath, which provides support for families with young children (from a psychodynamic perspective), and for two years with Men's Sexual Health, Devizes, in the field of men's health and wellbeing, where I engaged in longer-term work on sexuality and social identity.
For the past six years I have also worked as a volunteer counsellor with Help, Trowbridge, where a diverse range of clients are supported. In addition, since February 2016 I have worked as a counselling supervisor with Off The Record in Bath.
I also work with private clients in Bath, Trowbridge and the surrounding area. Long and shorter term therapy is available, depending on your needs - we work it out together as we go.
