About me

I offer counselling and psychotherapy in the Abergavenny area. I have many years' experience helping people with a great variety of issues. I specialise in anxiety and depression, and in problems arising from major life events, especially with bereavement and loss. There are so many forms of loss: relationship break-up or betrayal, illness, loss of someone close to you, redundancy or job changes, loss of confidence, loss of control. If you are suffering in any of these ways then counselling can be a real support, and a guide to finding a way forward.

Counselling can also help when we feel stuck and unhappy, when we keep repeating harmful experiences, or when we need help in making difficult decisions.

I can offer skilful, compassionate and confidential guidance, and a creative and sensitive approach to both short-term and long-term problems.

My background is in psychodynamic, archetypal, Gestalt and psychosynthesis therapies, but I am also trained in CBT and brief solution-focused techniques. I will tailor my approach to suit your individual needs.

I encourage my clients to experiment with creativity, such as working with dream imagery, writing or drawing. I may also use relaxation techniques, mindfulness and guided imagery. But none of this is compulsory! I will always be guided by whatever works best for you.

I can see clients for just a few sessions or for longer-term therapy.

I work from a comfortable, secluded upstairs room close to the centre of Abergavenny, with ample parking nearby. I see clients on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during working hours, but some early evening appointments may sometimes be available - please enquire for details. Sessions will last one hour, and I would generally see you at the same day and time each week.

My fees are £50 per session, though I offer an exploratory session for prospective clients for £35. I can offer concessions for students or those on a low income.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified as a counsellor in 2006, having had a previous career as a writer and university teacher. I have a post-graduate Diploma in Counselling (Integrative) from the University of Wales, and post-qualification I studied integrative psychosynthesis with the London-based Re-Vision organisation.  Since 2010 I have been an accredited and registered counsellor with BACP. I worked for several years as a voluntary counsellor for MIND and also counselled carers at Torfaen Carers' Centre in Pontypool. Since 2011 I have had a private practice in Abergavenny, and also work for EAP agencies.

I see clients of all ages from 16 upwards, and I've had a lot of valuable experience working with older people (70 plus) as well as with younger adults. I have worked successfully with post-traumatic stress, mid-life issues, bereavement, chronic anxiety, post-abortion and fertility issues, troubled relationships, addictive behaviours, work-related stress, social difficulties, illness and disability, low self-esteem, blocked creativity, personal crises, depression and distressing emotions.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
