About me

I am a Relate-trained and BACP Accredited Counsellor with 20 years’ experience of working with couples and individuals and I recently qualified as a family counsellor. I offer daytime and evening appointments, Monday to Saturday, both online or face to face, depending on your preference. All sessions last an hour. You can contact me by phone, text or email. I am happy for us to have a quick conversation to discuss what you are looking for from counselling.

Life is challenging. It may be that you're finding it difficult to communicate with those closest to you and are feeling alienated and lonely. Or you may be experiencing difficulties in your couple relationship, such as frequent arguments, poor communication or the aftermath of an affair. Or perhaps you are looking for support to help you through a bereavement or strategies to cope with depression and anxiety.

Whatever your difficulty, my aim is to offer you a safe place in which you can explore your feelings and understand how certain behaviours and ways of thinking can affect your relationships and outlook on life. Counselling allows you to identify the changes you would like to make and develop strategies to bring these about.

The first session is the initial consultation. This is an opportunity for us to meet, for me find out what your expectations are from counselling and assess whether I am the right counsellor to help you. It is equally important that you feel comfortable working with me. If I felt that you would benefit from working with a different counsellor, perhaps because they have a particular expertise, I would do my best to make a recommendation.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Further information

I work in Ashley Down, BS7, close to the Gloucestershire Cricket ground. There is on street parking. The 70 bus stops nearby and Montpelier train station is a 15 minute walk away.

I offer sessions both in person or online (or a hybrid of the two) and I can be flexible with session times to accommodate your needs.

The first step is to agree a mutually convenient time for the initial consultation. I ask clients to complete and return a short questionnaire prior to this session. This gives me a snapshot of what is going on in your life and frees up more time in the session to discuss your needs from the counselling.

If the decision is for you to progress onto ongoing counselling, we will agree an agenda for the work. If you are attending as an individual client, there are likely to be specific themes that you would like to explore and address. You may decide to do this systematically or that a more organic approach would suit you better.

With couples, the initial consultation is usually followed by an individual session with each of you. This allows me to get to know you better and understand your individual perspectives in greater depth. I will ask you questions about your families of origin. For instance, it is useful for me to know what you are each bringing to the couple relationship in terms of expectations, values, beliefs and experiences in previous relationships.  As the counselling progresses, it can be useful to hold further individual sessions, provided this is done with the consent of both parties.

I ask couple clients to keep texts and emails to me brief and factual and not to disclose information of a confidential nature between sessions. This it to protect confidentiality and to maintain transparency.
