About me

Are you experiencing challenging times currently and can't see a way through them? Are you looking to change some unhelpful patterns in your life? Do you need help to change an unhealthy relationship with food or want support in your eating disorder recovery journey?  Counselling and psychotherapy can be life changing, helping you see things much clearer, giving you a deeper understanding of yourself, who you are, and where you want to be.

I am an Accredited BACP counsellor and psychotherapist and Master practitioner for eating disorders. I also have a neurodiversity affirmative approach. I provide a confidential counselling and psychotherapy service in a safe, comfortable setting in central Exeter.  I am available for face to face or Zoom sessions.

I have experience in working with many issues including but not limited to- anxiety, abuse, bereavement, depression, affairs/betrayals, love & loss, low self esteem, menopause, work related issues. I see clients for all aspects of eating disorders- anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and bariatric clients. I use the unique model developed by The National Centre for Eating Disorders. I deliver courses and workshops for parents/carers. who have a loved one with an eating disorder and am trained in the New Maudsley method on motivational language. Supporting carers is a particularly important aspect for recovery as parents often become overwhelmed and do not know how to help.

My approach is Person Centred and Integrative which means that I will use different methods of therapy according to individual needs which include Gestalt, TA, CBT and Psychodynamics. I believe in creating a new therapy for each client as each client is a unique individual with unique thoughts, feelings and problems. The most important thing for me as a counsellor is that I try to see the world through my client's eyes and that I treat each client as the individual they are.

During an initial consultation we will discuss what your concerns are, your expectations of counselling and if together we will be able to form a therapeutic relationship. It is quite natural to feel anxious and nervous about an initial meet but my aim is to try to make you feel relaxed and comfortable as quickly as possible.

Clinical Supervision

I hold a British Psychological Society approved advanced supervision certificate Level 4 in clinical supervision and can offer qualified counsellors ongoing regular supervision sessions. I use an integrative approach according to your own needs and therapeutic model but am broadly influenced by Proctor's 3 Function Interactive Model. I am also able to offer case specific and ad hoc supervision if you are working with clients who present with eating disorders/disordered eating and body image issues and you are seeking additional support.

A note from Gillian.....

"During an initial consultation, we will discuss what your concerns are, your expectations of counselling and if together we will be able to form a therapeutic relationship. We will discuss the 'counselling contract' and what you can expect from me as the counsellor and some guidelines for you as my client.

It is quite natural to feel a little anxious and nervous about an initial meet but I aim to try to make you feel relaxed and comfortable as quickly as possible."

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
