About me

Relationships / marriages do sometimes break down and people can be left feeling angry, confused or scared. I am a fully qualified Relate-trained counsellor with over ten years' experience. I provide relationship counselling to both individuals and couples and work from rooms in the centre of Harrogate. Sessions can take place either in person or online and appointments can be made during the day or on an evening, depending on your availability.

What is relationship counselling ?

Typically clients may have discovered that:
- they have grown apart
- there has been an affair
- parenting issues
- sex issues
- family dynamics
- relationships from the past are impacting on the present

No matter what state you feel that your relationship has reached, counselling can help you to explore when and where the relationship faltered and help you discover if there is a way forward.

What happens in counselling?

At our initial meeting you would talk through your current situation, the issues that you feel need addressing and how you think that counselling may help. I would then discuss with you how I might be able to work with you and we would then both plan a way forward together.

Some people find that this initial session is all they need to clear their thinking, help them decide what action to take and that no further counselling is necessary. If together we all feel that further counselling would be beneficial, I would organise on-going counselling sessions, usually on a weekly basis. I typically see most people for two to five further sessions, although this will very much depend on how our sessions progress as further issues may be uncovered.

During counselling, my goal is to help individuals and couples to think through their own situation and to work through their own issues. My aim is to help you to understand yourself better, to work things out for yourself and for you to be in a position to make your own decision about what to do next.

Counselling sessions can be held face-to-face in our offices in central Harrogate, or online through Zoom or Skype. You may prefer online sessions if you’re unable to travel into Harrogate, if you or your partner regularly work away from home, if you are each based at different locations, or if you need to accommodate childcare.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a professionally qualified 'Relate Counsellor', experienced in working with both individuals and couples and specialising in relationship issues.

Becoming a 'Relate Counsellor' requires two years formal training at the national Relate Institute, followed by 500 hours of supervised counselling. I have been practicing as a Relate Counsellor since 2009.

I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and I adhere to the BACP Code of Ethics and Practice Guidelines. I trained at Leeds Metropolitan University and the Relate Institute and undertake on-going training as part of my Continuous Professional Development.

Certain counselling styles suit some people more than others and so I draw from a range of approaches to provide the right support for you. My website profile explains more about what I do and how I might be able to help - www.listening-room.co.uk/gill-davis

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
