I am a registered nurse, Hospice sister and trained and experienced solution focused brief therapist with 25 years experience of providing counselling, mediation and training. I run my own practice in Cheam, Surrey.
Avenues Therapy Services is a registered business and offers Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Counselling.
I work with Couples, Families, Adolescents and Children over 5 years.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy works for all types of issues and concerns and effective outcomes are achieved, usually in 3-5 sessions.
I work with couples in crisis, and also specialise in specific issues such as bereavement, relationships, confidence and assertiveness.
As an experienced school counsellor, my work with adolescents includes issues such as anxiety, exam stress, peer relationships, eating disorders and self injury.
I am happy to offer a telephone consultation session, at no charge, prior to commencement of counselling. This will give you an opportunity to ask any questions and ensure that you receive the kind of therapy that best suits your needs.
As my practice is very busy, please leave your contact details on the confidential office phone 020 8644 1555 or by email: firstname.lastname@example.org and I will get in touch with you at the earliest opportunity to arrange appointments.

As the name suggests, SFBT is future-focused, goal-directed, and concentrates on solutions, rather than on the problems that brought clients to seek therapy. It is based on a form of specialised conversations that are directed toward developing and achieving the client’s vision of solutions. The therapist works collaboratively with the client, in a safe and enabling environment offering respect for the client and their values, beliefs and preferred lifestyles.
Described as a practical, goal-driven model, a hallmark of SFBT is its emphasis on clear, concise, realistic goal negotiations. The SFBT approach assumes that all clients have some knowledge of what would make their life better, even though they may need some (at times, considerable) help describing the details of their better life and that everyone who seeks help already possesses at least the minimal skills necessary to create solutions.
To summarise, ‘Solution Focused Brief Therapy’ is an approach that involves:
- Working respectfully alongside clients
- Valuing people’s own knowledge about their lives
- Identifying people’s strengths, resources, and positive experiences
- Helping people separate from problems and difficulties
- Moving away from blame and shame
- Discovering new ideas and stories to guide our lives in preferred directions
As a SFBT Practitoner, I am trained to listen carefully to what you want and to support you while you find your own solutions. The relationship between us is confidential and is based on respect and trust. You will not be criticised, nor will you be put under pressure to do or feel anything. We will help you find solutions that are realistic and workable for you.
Here are some recent testimonials from clients who had completed therapy in August 2016.
"Since we last met, things have moved on for me in a good way. I have managed to get a part time job on reception at one of the David Lloyd clubs! It helps my confidence no end but I still get the odd wobble from time to time. I am so grateful for what you have done for me in the past and I don't think I could've got through my exams and to this point without your help." Olivia 16yrs
“This counselling was so different and we were both sceptical that it would help, but things were so desperate we wanted to give it a try. Life has changed for us beyond measure. I was so sure that our relationship could not survive but within 3 sessions, we were smiling at each other again and I rediscovered hope for our future together.” Mark 4 sessions. June 2016
"I waited until now before contacting you with feedback, because to be honest, I couldn't believe that the changes could be sustained for us both. Nearly a year later though, we are still going strong, remembering to be kind to each other and celebrating every single success. I can now believe in a future for us both together, and we are planning an addition to our family in May! Who'd have believed it!!" Jack P. 5 sessions. October 2015
I have been a patient of therapy for ten years, but by far working with Gianna with her methods of solution focused brief therapy has enacted the most positive, dynamic, encouraging, and effective change. My husband and I met with her for couples therapy, and within two sessions we resolved to fight for our marriage instead of filing for divorce. Gianna provided a warm and caring environment for my husband and I to remember and reflect upon our joint visions and love. Through her help our marriage was salvaged and geared for success. It’s difficult to sum up how much of a difference seeing you has made to my life. Before I started counselling, I was under a fog that would never seem to lift.
I couldn’t see past the unhappy place I was in. I met you when I had no confidence or self-esteem. I questioned everything, and felt like a failure and disappointment. Overtime, I have changed the way I think and how I see things, and I feel that had I not taken the leap to see Gianna, my life would be very different. In truth Gianna I know that in many ways you saved me from myself . I don’t think thank you even comes close to express what I mean.

I found our sessions very helpful and they have enabled to view myself in a different light. Perhaps what I used to see as negative traits are actually positive qualities and whilst I can't change who I am fundamentally, I know I do have to make some changes, so I am working on it!

Now that we have finished therapy, I have been thinking about the sessions and how they have been helpful. Solution focused brief therapy made me focus more on the present and on my future goals, you gave me more awareness and helped me focus on what helps me feel better or more positive. Throughout, I was encouraged to take risks, and to think about what was going well and what I had achieved, this enabled me to look at things more positively. By facing up to thought provoking situations, and learning to deal with my anxiety, I was helped to believe that ‘I can do it’!
I have become more self accepting and more assertive, I am more outward looking and thinking about my ambitions and goals Instead of what was always going wrong. My life is now going in the right direction. Thank you.
