About me

'Whatever your situation, however big or small you perceive it to be,we'll be finding a way forwards together'

Hello, my name is Georgia Butler and I'm an Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. I provide professional and confidential counselling in the region of Suffolk and Essex.

My private practice, Georgia Butler Counselling is ideally located just outside Woodbridge and was created in 2007 to provide a high quality yet affordable counselling service to adults, adolescents, couples and student counsellors whatever their religious, political, or social background.

I strongly believe in treating everyone as an individual and want to make you feel as welcome and comfortable as possible.

I believe wholeheartedly that people can change. To enable this to happen, I offer a warm safe environment providing a therapeutic relationship which is  honest, genuine, empathic and accepting.

This allows you to talk freely and be heard. To share with someone who will not judge you, but who will listen and use their counselling skills to help you

  • reduce confusion
  • gain a clear insight into what is troubling you
  • work through your situation at your pace, exploring what you would like to be different, and what fears and anxieties are blocking you.

'Working together we will empower you to discover your own resources to find solutions to rebuild your life.'

Training, qualifications & experience

I obtained a BSc (Hons) in Integrative Counselling (2009) at Matrix College of Counselling & Psychotherapy affiliated by Middlesex University.

I am also a BUPA accredited counsellor.

I have acquired over 4500 counselling hours over 15 years.

Currently I work full-time in Private Practice and also offer self development groups and workshops (content decided by the group or agency). I also devote time to Continuing Professional Development, develop services offered, marketing and training.

My career began as a trainee counsellor at Norcas, a drugs and alcohol agency in Suffolk 2004 where I benefited from the specialist training given in addictions, solution focussed therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

In 2007 I began counselling at The Kernos Centre offering long term therapy to both adults and children. The Kernos Centre provided me with specialised training and experience in adolescent counselling, trauma and abuse and couples counselling.

In 2010 I began receiving regular referrals for individuals and couples from Surestart Children’s Centres across Suffolk. As my private practice expanded, it was regret that I decided to leave The Kernos Centre. I owe Kernos my love and ability to counsel adolescents and remain grateful to my colleagues and supervisors who supported me in my early years of counselling.

My integrative counselling approach uses concepts common to several schools of counselling. The foundations of this model are firmly rooted in the effectiveness of the counselling relationship. Counsellors and psychotherapists whose work have both influenced and inspired me, are Richard Erskine (Integrative), Carl Rogers (Person- Centred), Eric Berne (Transactional Analysis), Fritz Perls (Gestalt) and Pedasky (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy).

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I have a passion for helping people recover from anxiety and depression.

Suffering chronically with both in early childhood through to early adulthood I know how it can rob you of joy , destroy your quality of life and relationships leaving you feeling alone, isolated, helpless and desperate . If left, these feelings can intensify, feel overwhelming and can potentially send you to a dark place ----.

Counselling does work and with an effective therapeutic relationship, you will be able to share and exploring your feelings and current situation. This may mean delving into the past or talking about the future.

You control the content and I journey alongside you.

This will enable you to discover your own coping strategies, and internal and external resources. Eventually, working at your own pace, your anxiety and depression (and other symptoms) will lessen as you begin to create a new life for yourself one where joy, laughter and happiness is much more prevalent. Most importantly you are not alone.   I know it works for this is my story.
