About me

Hi, my name is Gemma and I am an experienced BACP Registered and NCS Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Psychologist based in Staffordshire.

I would like to acknowledge how hard it can be to reach out for support and I would like to make this as simple, supportive and helpful as possible. I am passionate about therapy being accessible and tailored to your individual needs. I will therefore offer an accurate, collaborative assessment of your needs, and endeavour to decide together the most appropriate form of support. I believe that I offer a realistic, empathic, professional yet approachable style of therapy.

I have a wealth of experience in a wide aspect of mental health and wellbeing, having worked as a therapist for the last 15 years with children, young people and adults in a variety of settings.

Since qualifying I have worked in a variety of services (NHS, CAMHS, Private Practice, Employee Assisted Programmes and the voluntary sector). My experience to date has included working with adults with complex mental health needs, general mental health and wellbeing (such as stress, anxiety and depression, for example), children and adolescents (aged 4-18) and parenting (Attachment Parenting and Triple P).

I am a trauma informed therapist with special interest in attachment, neuro-diversity, anxiety and relationships.

I am passionate about using my skills gained to help recovery and growth of those experiencing psychological and emotional distress. My personal style of counselling/therapy could be described as Integrative, as I use my core person-centred counselling skills to build the therapeutic relationship, and have experience of integrating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment Therapy, Solution Focussed Therapy and Coaching into my counselling practice.

I have recently done some additional training in Menopause Wellness, Coaching, Trauma and further anxiety management which I am hoping to offer to clients. I am passionate about health and wellbeing, acknowledging how this impacts on our mental health.  I have a particular interest in chronic illness and managing autoimmune/health conditions.

I always work collaboratively with my clients, empowering them to lead the therapy and be in control of their process. However, I like to incorporate psychological theories to help my clients to better understand themselves. I have found that this approach has enabled my clients to be empowered to move forward with their presenting concerns, learning skills that they can use in the future to maintain their emotional well-being.

What is different about Sherwin Psychological Therapies?

I complete most of the therapeutic work myself, however I do have a team of Associates who work for the organisation who I can call upon should you need support outside of my remit. The access to a wider team of support means that you can get the help you need quicker and more effectively, without waiting lists.

I also offer Supervision to qualified and trainee counsellors. I have a Level 7 Diploma in Counselling Supervision and really enjoy empowering other therapists to reach their potential. If you are a counsellor, looking for supervision - please check out my supervision page and get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Personal Experience
I believe that some of the best therapists are ones who have experienced what it can be like to struggle with their own life challenges and have experienced the impact of mental ill health, either within themselves or loved ones. Professionals are human too! I have personally have had times in my life where I have struggled with managing my emotional wellbeing. I believe that this experience has enabled me to develop an empathy and better understanding of my clients journey.  Therapy has beneficial for me during these times, and has helped me to gain perspective. and develop coping strategies that I still use today. Hopefully, therapy could work for you too!

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
