Foteini Palyvou MSc Integrative Psychotherapy, BSc (Hons) Psychology, UKCP Reg
Hello and welcome. My name is Foteini. I am a qualified and UKCP registered integrative psychotherapist with extensive experience of supporting clients with a range of issues such as anxiety, relationship issues, depression, family issues.
I specialise in working with individuals who are identical or fraternal twins, and have specific interest in trauma. I offer both short and long term psychotherapy to adults and young people, in English and in Greek, from my private practice in Woking.
As a heterosexual woman I am LGBT affirmative in my practice. I abide by the Code of Ethics of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the Code of Ethics of Metanoia Institute London.
I became an integrative psychotherapist as I believe that each person is unique and 'one size does not fit all'. My approach allows me to draw upon a variety of theories to best suit the needs of each individual I work with. I also work relationally. This means that my understanding of the current difficulties and struggles for any client is often based in difficult experiences in childhood. So part of how I work would be to gently bring these into conscious awareness. Working relationally also means that the best thing that we have in the room to work with your wounds, whether they are based in the past, the present or both, is to use our relationship as a place where you can be met, witnessed, and responded to in a way that was not possible for you when you were growing up.
More specifically, I can offer you a safe, empathic, non-judgmental environment to explore and understand the origins of your emotional distress and relational struggles; an attentive and attuned presence to help you get in touch with and process difficult emotions and archaic wounds; an empirical way of understanding and managing physiological symptoms; and most importantly a respectful, collaborative stance that will help us achieve change, growth and healing in your life.
I specialise in working with individuals who are identical or fraternal twins and that have found their twinship to be both a source of happiness and distress. Twins go through unique developmental processes. The most decisive one has to do with the way in which their identity is formed - through the attachment with the co-twin (twin identity) as well as with the attachment each twin forms with the parents (individual identity) - as this becomes the blueprint of the way that each twin relates in life with others. Therefore an important juncture in a twin's life is to find the balance between developing an individual, different sense of self, without losing the special bond they share with their twin.
I also have a specific interest in trauma, whether it results from a single traumatic event (e.g. sexual assault, or natural disaster); or is a product of developmental injury (e.g. being rejected as a child); or it stems from one's attachment history (e.g. abuse and neglect in childhood). Even though trauma can disrupt life, there is hope. Drawing from Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, the field of neuroscience, Polyvagal and Attachment Theory, we can strengthen your resilience through psychoeducation (understanding the why and how of our nervous system's responses) and by developing resources to deal with the frightening physical and emotional sensations that accompany trauma.
Training, qualifications & experience
Psychology and psychotherapy have always been a passion in my life. After obtaining a BSc (Hons) Psychology from University of Surrey I chose to train as a psychotherapist in a modality that would allow me to respect and respond effectively to the uniqueness of each client I meet. This led to an in-depth, high quality training from Metanoia Institute from where I obtained an MSc Integrative Psychotherapy and a Clinical Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy.
I also hold the following qualifications:
Foundation Certificate in Psychotherapy & Counselling - Regent's College, London
BSc (Hons) Industrial Management & Technology - University of Piraeus, Greece
As an ethical and professional practitioner it is imperative for me to grow and expand my knowledge and skills through additional, regular training. My Continuing Professional Development training courses include the following:
Certificate in 'Youth Counselling' - Youth Counselling Service, Guildford
Certificate in 'Awareness in Bereavement Care: A Foundation Course' - Cruse & OCNW, Guildford
Certificate in 'Trauma Training: Embodied Trauma & Treatment' - Portsmouth Counselling Service
Certificate in 'Trauma Embodied Training' - Portsmouth Counselling Service
Certificate in 'Therapy as Interpersonal Neuroregulation: A Sensorimotor Approach to Psychotherapy' - Metanoia Institute, London

Certificate of competency in 'Using Psychological Tests: Beck Depression Inventory, Patient Health Questionnaire, General Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire, CORE System and Working Alliance Inventory' - Metanoia Institute, London
Certificate in 'Integrated Energy Techniques: EFT, NLP, Hypnotherapy' - The iEFT Centre, London
Certificate in 'Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Level 1' - The iEFT Centre, London
I gained my experience of providing short-term (counselling) and long-term (psychotherapy) therapy for individuals, through working in a variety of settings, such as educational, charities and NHS.
My counselling experience includes working as a bereavement counsellor at Cruse Bereavement South West Surrey; student counsellor at Farnborough College of Technology; and youth counsellor at VirginCare's NHS Youth Counselling Service.
As a psychotherapist I have worked in charities that offer generic counselling such as MCPS (Metanoia Counselling & Psychotherapy Service) and Portsmouth Counselling Service. My work is also informed by the valuable experience I gained from a clinical work shadowing placement at the psychiatric hospital The Orchards, Solent NHS Trust.
My expertise includes the following issues: identity and self-esteem problems; relationship problems and family difficulties; bereavement and loss; life transitions and changes; sexuality and sexual issues; cultural issues. All of these issues can have a profound impact on one's life and can disrupt everyday life, or even worse, distort the connection one has with his/her self and with others. As a result, symptoms or conditions such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, addictive behaviours etc. emerge and develop in an unconscious effort to restore one's internal balance.
